Chapter 6 - A Life Beyond the ShadowsSix months later, the morning sun over the coast of Maine was warm, clear, and bright.

A small, charming coastal house sat perched on a green hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, far away from the dark alleys of South Boston and the chemical fumes of city laundries.
On the wide wooden porch, Mateo was sitting at a picnic table, happily drawing in a sketchbook, his lungs clear and healthy in the crisp, salt-laden sea air.
Caris walked out onto the porch holding two mugs of coffee. She wore a comfortable white sweater and jeans, her brown hair tied back in a loose braid, her skin glowing with health and peace.
She walked over to the edge of the porch, handing one of the mugs to Leo, who was leaning against the railing, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.
He had traded his bespoke suits for simple clothes, though he still carried the quiet, formidable strength of a man who ruled an empire. But the cold, paranoid exhaustion that had once lived in his eyes was gone, replaced by a profound, unshakeable peace.
“What are you thinking about?” Caris asked softly, leaning her side against his chest.
Leo wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close, resting his chin against the top of her head as he took a sip of hot coffee.
“I was thinking about L’Aureole,” Leo said, a rare, faint smile touching his lips. “And how I paid three hundred dollars to stop a woman from scrubbing a floor.”
Caris laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that echoed across the quiet water. She reached up, her soft, smooth hand wrapping around his calloused fingers.
“Best three hundred dollars you ever spent, Castiglione,” she teased gently.

“No,” Leo said softly, turning his head to kiss her lips with absolute, unyielding devotion. “It was the only money I ever spent that actually bought me a life.”
They stood together on the porch as the sun rose higher over the ocean, leaving the shadows of the past behind, bound forever by a love born in a dark service hallway.
