Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Secret

The shattered glass from the coffee carafe lay scattered across the linoleum like a constellation of jagged stars, but neither Vincent nor Claire moved. The heavy, damp air of the diner seemed to press down on them, thick with the smell of spilled robusta and cheap floor wax. Vincent’s gaze remained locked on Claire’s abdomen, the violent kick of the child having stripped away every layer of denial he had cultivated over the past eight months.

"Why?" Vincent asked again, his voice dropping into that quiet, measured register that always preceded violence. "You had three million sitting in a Zurich account. You had a car, a passport under a clean alias I set up just in case, and an apartment in Geneva. Instead, you're scrubbing grease off a counter in a part of town where the police take twenty minutes to answer a call."

Claire kept the stainless-steel serving spoon raised, her knuckles white. "Because your money comes with blood on it, Vincent. Every cent in that account was paid for by someone else's misery. I didn't want your pity, and I certainly didn't want to raise a child who learned to walk over broken bodies."

"That child is a Caruso," Vincent said, taking half a step forward. The motion was so subtle that only someone who knew him as well as Frank Calder could read the coiled tension in his shoulders. "And a Caruso doesn't hide behind a neon sign in the rain. More importantly, someone knew you were pregnant before I did."

Claire’s breath hitched. She fought to keep her face neutral, but the micro-twitch of her left eye betrayed her.

Vincent caught it instantly. He turned his head slightly, his eyes locking onto the swinging kitchen doors where Walter Dean had vanished moments earlier. "Frank," Vincent said without turning around. "Go check the kitchen. If Walter has a phone to his ear, break it. If he has a radio, smash it. Then bring him out here."

Frank didn't hesitate. "Boss."

"Don't you dare," Claire cried out, lowering the spoon and lunging around the counter.

Vincent caught her by the upper arms. His grip was firm, impossible to break, yet gentle enough not to bruise her skin. The closeness sent a familiar, agonizing electric shock through Claire's spine. For months, she had dreamed of this scent—expensive sandalwood mixed with the sharp ozone of the rainy night—and now that it surrounded her, she wanted to scream.

"Let go of me, Vincent!"

"Quiet, Claire," he murmured, his face inches from hers. His dark eyes burned with an intensity that terrified her more than his anger. "Someone leaked your location. You didn't slip up. You've been paying cash, using a burner phone, hiding in the shadows. The only way anyone found you is if a leak brought them straight to your door. Walter didn't just recognize me from the evening news. He recognized you because someone showed him a photograph."

A loud crash echoed from the kitchen, followed by the clatter of stainless steel pans hitting the floor and a sharp, muffled gasp from Walter.

Frank emerged a moment later, dragging Walter by the collar of his grease-stained shirt. A cheap burner phone skittered across the floor, its screen glowing with an outgoing text message.

Vincent released Claire slowly, his eyes never leaving Walter's terrified, pale face. He knelt, picked up the phone, and read the glowing text aloud to the empty diner.

"She's here. The boss found her."
