Chapter 4 - The Blood on the VelvetThe tactical battle inside the ballroom was short, brutal, and decisive.

Adrien’s elite security team, already alerted by Lena’s warning, swarmed the room from the service entrances. Within four minutes, Cortese’s hit squad was neutralized, and Dominic Cortese was pinned to the floor in handcuffs by Marco.

The guests were evacuated through private emergency corridors, leaving the grand ballroom silent once again, save for the hum of ventilation fans clearing the lingering white smoke.

Adrien stood over Dominic Cortese, his sidearm lowered at his side.

"You were foolish, Dominic," Adrien said, his voice colder than a winter storm. "You thought a few smoke bombs and five shooters could take my table?"

Dominic spat blood onto the polished marble floor. "Someone tipped you off, Varelli! You were looking at the balcony before my men even breached the glass!"

Adrien slowly turned his head to look at Lena, who was standing safely behind the marble pillar, her emerald gown slightly dusted with plaster, her dark eyes wide but steady.

"My assistant sees everything, Dominic," Adrien said smoothly. "That is why she sits at my right hand."

Adrien gestured to Marco. "Take Cortese to the docks. Strip him of his territories and hand him over to the federal prosecutor. The Cortese syndicate ends tonight."

"Understood, Don Varelli," Marco nodded, dragging the screaming rival boss out through the service lift.

Once the room was cleared, Adrien dropped his weapon into his holster and turned to Lena. The cold, merciless boss vanished, replaced by a man consumed by intense, raw concern.

He walked over to her, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out to touch her face, checking her skin, her hair, her arms for any sign of injury.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice rough with emotion. "Tell me you are not hurt, Lena."

"I'm... I'm fine," Lena breathed out, looking up into his dark, tortured eyes. "Adrien... you're bleeding."

She pointed to his left arm. A bullet had grazed his forearm through his velvet jacket, soaking the black fabric with crimson blood.

"It is nothing," Adrien dismissed instantly.

"It isn't nothing!" Lena insisted, taking his uninjured hand and pulling him toward a velvet sofa. "Sit down. You saved my life tonight. The least you can do is let me clean your arm."

Adrien allowed himself to be guided. He sat on the sofa, watching silently as Lena tore a strip of clean linen from a cloth napkin, fetched a bottle of high-proof vodka from the bar, and knelt beside him.

She carefully cut away his blood-soaked sleeve. Her hands were gentle, her touch soothing as she cleaned the graze with alcohol. Adrien didn't flinch at the sting of the alcohol; his eyes were locked entirely on her face.

"You didn't run," Adrien said softly, his voice echoing in the vast, empty ballroom.

"What?" Lena looked up from his arm, her dark eyes meeting his.

"When the smoke cleared and the shooting started... any other woman would have run for the exit," Adrien said, reaching out with his right hand to gently cup her cheek, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "You stayed beside me."

"I couldn't leave you," Lena admitted, her voice dropping to a whisper, her heart racing against her chest. "I realized... I realized I care about what happens to you, Adrien."

Adrien’s breath hitched. The legendary mafia Don, feared by kings and syndicate bosses across two continents, looked utterly undone by the simple confession of a girl from Queens.

"Lena," he whispered, his face closing the distance between them. "I have built an empire out of control and silence. But from the moment I saw you sleeping in Booth Seven... you destroyed every rule I ever lived by."

He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that shattered the last remaining walls between them.

Lena let out a soft sigh against his mouth, her arms sliding around his neck, burying her fingers in his thick black hair as she returned his kiss with a hunger that matched his own.
