Chapter 3 - Unspoken Bonds & High SocietyThe threat at the south gate turned out to be a deliberate distraction engineered by Victor Falcone—the current head of the Falcone syndicate—to test Moretti’s security response times. But the message was clear: war was knocking on the door.

To counter the growing rumors that the Moretti family was weakening, Adrian organized an emergency summit disguised as an exclusive, high-society charity gala at his private estate. The event would bring together Chicago’s top politicians, judges, business moguls, and rival syndicate leaders under one roof—a show of absolute dominance and ironclad control.

Claire was in her element, directing decorators, florists, and external security teams with militaristic precision.

"Miss Brooks," Claire said, entering the kitchen where Elena was prepping small bite-sized desserts. "You will remain in the lower kitchen tonight. The external catering staff will handle the main ballroom."

"I prepared forty dozen hand-piped salted caramel tarts, Claire," Elena pointed out, wiping her hands on a towel. "They need to be finished right before serving, or the pastry softens."

"The guests will not notice," Claire dismissed cold-heartedly. "This is an elite gathering. Your presence in the main hall would be... distracting."

Elena felt a sharp pang in her chest. She knew what Claire meant. In a room full of stick-thin socialites, high-fashion models, and pristine mafia wives, Elena’s generous hips, full curves, and flour-dusted hands didn't fit the picture.

"Miss Whitmore," a deep voice boomed from the pantry doorway.

Adrian stepped into the kitchen, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo with silver cufflinks. He looked breathtakingly handsome, like a dark king ready to claim his throne.

Claire straightened immediately. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Miss Brooks will not be in the lower kitchen," Adrian stated calmly. "She will be managing the private VIP suite on the second floor, where my private meetings with the syndicate heads will take place."

Claire gasped slightly. "Mr. Moretti, that room requires seasoned diplomacy and high security—"

"And absolute loyalty," Adrian cut in, his eyes fixing on Claire with cold fury. "Elena manages the VIP suite. That is final."

Claire bit her lip, bowed her head, and swiftly exited the kitchen.

Elena looked down at her simple work uniform. "Adrian, I don't have anything appropriate to wear upstairs. I look like a line cook."

Adrian smiled—a real, genuine smile that lit up his dark eyes. He stepped aside, revealing a garment bag hanging from a coat rack in the hall.

"Open it," he murmured.

Elena unzipped the bag. Inside lay a breathtaking emerald green silk gown with a modest sweetheart neckline, elbow-length lace sleeves, and a draped skirt designed to celebrate every single curve of a woman's body.

"It's... it's gorgeous," Elena whispered, her hands hovering over the rich fabric. "How did you get my measurements?"

"I asked Gloria," Adrian admitted smoothly. "And I have good eyes. Put it on, Elena. Tonight, you aren't staff. You are my guest."

An hour later, the Moretti estate was ablaze with crystal chandeliers, classical violin music, and the low hum of dangerous power.

Elena descended the secondary staircase wearing the emerald gown, her dark hair styled in soft, cascading curls, her skin glowing. She felt elegant, beautiful, and remarkably confident.

As she entered the VIP suite, Nathan Cole stood guard near the balcony. He looked at her and offered an approving nod. "You look stunning, Elena."

"Thanks, Nathan. Where’s Adrian?"

"Downstairs greeting the mayor. He’ll be up in ten minutes with Victor Falcone and his top lieutenants."

Elena began arranging the crystal glassware and placing her freshly baked tarts on silver trays.

A few minutes later, Claire entered the room carrying a bottle of rare 1982 vintage wine on a silver platter. Her face was pale, her hands visibly trembling as she adjusted the crystal decanter near the window.

"Are you alright, Claire?" Elena asked gently, stepping toward her. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"I am fine, Miss Brooks," Claire snapped defensively. "Mind your own business."

As Claire turned to leave, her clipboard fell to the floor, spilling papers across the rug. Elena leaned down to help her gather them. Among the routine catering invoices, a folded piece of heavy paper caught Elena’s eye.

It was a printed architectural map of the Moretti estate's underground panic room, complete with security bypass codes written in red ink.

At the top of the page, a simple instruction was typed: Disable the VIP balcony sensors at 10:15 PM. $2 Million wired to your offshore account.

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She looked up.

Claire was staring down at her, her eyes wide with terror and panic.

"Claire..." Elena whispered, horror dawning on her. "You... you betrayed him?"

Claire’s expression instantly turned cold and desperate. She reached into her blazer, pulling out a small silver pistolet. "You shouldn't have opened that, you foolish baker."

"He trusted you!" Elena gasped, standing up slowly, holding her hands out. "He gave you everything!"

"He treated me like a servant for ten years!" Claire hissed, her voice shaking violently. "Victor Falcone promised me a real future. A share of the shipping business. All I have to do is let his men onto the balcony tonight."

Footsteps echoed outside the hallway.

Adrian’s voice drifted through the heavy doors. "...we can discuss the dock allocations upstairs, Victor."

Claire panicked. She raised the gun toward Elena’s chest. "Step back into the closet, or I shoot you now!"

Elena didn't hesitate. Thinking of Adrian walking into a trap, she lunged forward with all her weight, slamming her body directly into Claire.

The gun fired with a muffled pop, the bullet embedding itself into the wooden doorframe. Claire tumbled backward into a side table, smashing a crystal tray of pastries and hitting her head hard against the marble hearth. She crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

The VIP doors burst open.

Adrian rushed into the room, gun drawn, Nathan right behind him with his weapon raised.

"Elena!" Adrian roared, his eyes wild with terror as he saw the bullet hole in the door and Elena standing near the unconscious Claire, holding the security map in her hand.

"Adrian!" Elena cried out, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "It's Claire! She was opening the balcony for Falcone’s men at ten-fifteen!"

Adrian didn't look at Claire. He didn't look at the map.

He dropped his gun onto the couch, sprinted across the room, and grabbed Elena by her shoulders, checking every inch of her body with frantic, shaking hands.

"Are you hurt? Did she shoot you? Talk to me, Elena!"

"I'm fine! I tackled her!" Elena stammered, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "I'm okay!"

Adrian pulled her into his chest with overwhelming force, burying his face in her hair. His body was shaking violently.

"God, Elena," he choked out, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in nine long years. "If I had lost you..."

Nathan immediately dragged the unconscious Claire out of the room through a side door, calling in security forces over his radio.

Adrian pulled back slightly, his dark eyes locked onto Elena’s face. He cupped her cheeks in his large, warm hands.

"I love you," Adrian whispered, his voice steady and resolute. "I buried my heart nine years ago, Elena. But you brought it back to life. You brought me back to life."

Elena’s heart leaped in her chest. "Adrian..."

He leaned down and kissed her—a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that wiped away every fear, every doubt, and every shadow in the room.
