Chapter 6 - A New DawnSix months later, the morning sun broke over a quiet, tree-lined street in downtown Chicago.

A brand-new, beautifully painted storefront displayed gold lettering across the front glass: Brooks & Moretti Artisan Bakery.
Inside, the air smelled heavenly—rich roasted coffee beans, fresh cardamom buns, vanilla bean glaze, and warm sourdough bread.
The display cases were filled with hand-piped tarts, golden croissants, and rich chocolate cakes.
Elena stood behind the marble counter in a clean white apron, smiling warmly as she handed a bag of warm pastries to an elderly couple.
"Thank you, Miss Elena! These are even better than your father's famous recipe!" the woman cheered.
"That's high praise, Mrs. Higgins! Have a wonderful day!"
The bell above the shop door chimed.
Adrian walked in, dressed in a simple navy blue sweater and dark jeans—a far cry from his old, terrifying three-piece suits. He looked relaxed, happy, and younger than he had in a decade.
Behind him trotted Winston, wearing a cute little red handkerchief around his neck. The terrier immediately trotted over to Elena and sat down right on her shoe.
"No remorse," Elena chuckled, leaning over the counter.
"None at all," Adrian smiled, stepping around the counter to wrap his arms tightly around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "How's the grand opening morning going?"
"We sold out of the cherry cheese pastries in twenty minutes," Elena boasted proudly, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "Nathan bought two dozen for the security team."
"Nathan is going to need a bigger uniform," Adrian joked softly, kissing her cheek.
Following the downfall of the Falcone syndicate, Adrian had systematically dismantled his illegal operations, transitioning his vast empire into legitimate real estate, international shipping logistics, and philanthropic foundations. Chicago was peaceful, and the Moretti name was now associated with legitimate business and civic rebuilding.
Gloria remained the estate’s head housekeeper, while Claire was currently serving a fifteen-year prison sentence for conspiracy and treason.
"I brought you something," Adrian said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, elegant velvet box.
Elena gasped softly. "Adrian... what is that?"
"Nine years ago, I thought my life was over," Adrian said, his voice deep and filled with profound emotion as he sank down onto one knee on the bakery floor. "I lived in a dark, silent fortress, waiting to die. And then a curvy, beautiful, fearless baker chased a puppy into my office, sat in my chair, wore my glasses, and made me remember what it felt like to be human."
He opened the box, revealing a stunning three-carat cushion-cut diamond ring set in rose gold.
"Elena Brooks, you saved my life. Will you marry me and make me laugh for the rest of my days?"
Tears of pure joy spilled down Elena’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes! Yes, absolute yes!" she cried, throwing her arms around his neck as Adrian stood up and slid the ring onto her finger.
Winston barked happily, jumping up and down around their feet.

Adrian held Elena tight, lifting her up and spinning her around in the center of their beautiful bakery, his deep, joyful laughter filling the warm, sweet-scented air.
The silence was finally gone. And in its place lay a future filled with warmth, love, and a lifetime of fresh beginnings.
