Chapter 3 - The Unlikely AllianceThe next few weeks were a dance of shadows. Adrian kept Mara close, not as a prisoner, but as a protégé. He moved her into his fortified penthouse, claiming it was for "security reasons," though they both knew it was to keep her under his watchful eye.

Nathan Cole was deeply skeptical. He saw Mara as a liability, a potential plant from a rival syndicate. He watched her every move, tracing her calls and monitoring her every interaction with the household staff.
But Adrian was different. He found himself inexplicably drawn to her. It wasn't just the song; it was her intellect. When they discussed the evidence she had provided—corrupted files, shell company logs, and encrypted emails—he was impressed by how much she had already unraveled on her own.
"Why are you doing this?" Adrian asked one night as they sat in his study, surrounded by architectural schematics. "You have no connection to Claire. You gain nothing from this."
Mara looked up from the map of the city. "We’re more alike than you think, Adrian. I’ve lost people, too. And I’ve learned that the only way to heal the ghost is to hunt down the monster."
Adrian looked at her, seeing a reflection of his own pain in her eyes. For the first time in years, the crushing weight of his grief felt manageable. He started to see Mara not as a stranger, but as the only person in the world who understood the darkness he inhabited.
They began to work together. He provided the resources—the hackers, the safe houses, the muscle—and she provided the intelligence. They found the link: a man named Julian Vane, a powerful city developer who had been siphoning millions from public housing projects.
But as they drew closer to the truth, the danger escalated. Attempts on Adrian’s life became frequent. A sniper at a gala, a car bomb that failed to detonate, a poisoned glass of wine.
"They know we're onto them," Adrian said, pulling Mara into his office as a warning alarm sounded in the building. "We're going to have to make a move."

"We go to the press," Mara suggested.
"The press is bought," Adrian said. "We need to hit them where it hurts. We need to hit Vane."
