Chapter 5 - The Healing of Moretti Estate

Three days after the attack, the Moretti estate was quiet once again.

The damaged gates had been replaced with reinforced steel, the traitorous lawyer Jonathan Hail was permanently handled, and the Valenti syndicate had been completely dismantled by Gabriel’s relentless, merciless retaliation.

The storm outside had finally passed, replaced by a soft, golden sunrise that bathed the mansion in warm light.

Inside the master suite—a room no servant had ever been permitted to enter—Emma sat on the edge of the large king-sized bed. She wore a soft cream-colored sweater. Her hand was bandaged where she had scraped it during the fight, but otherwise she was unhurt.

Gabriel stood by the large bay window, watching the sun rise over the courtyard. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

"The girls are sleeping peacefully," Emma said softly, breaking the quiet. "Sophia ate all her breakfast, and Lily walked all the way to the window by herself this morning."

Gabriel turned around slowly. He looked at Emma for a long moment, his dark eyes filled with a emotion so deep it made her heart flutter.

He walked over and sat down beside her on the bed.

"You should have left," Gabriel said quietly, his deep voice carrying a trace of lingering guilt. "When the alarms went off... you could have been killed. My world is dangerous, Emma. I am a dangerous man."

Emma looked at his strong, handsome face. She reached out with her uninjured hand and gently touched his forearm.

"A dangerous man protects his family," Emma said softly. "You threw yourself into gunfire to save us. I saw the way you looked at those men when you thought they might hurt the girls. You aren't a monster, Gabriel. You're a father who loves his children more than life itself."

Gabriel looked down at her small hand on his arm. He raised his own hand, weaving his fingers through hers.

"I didn't just fight for the girls, Emma," Gabriel murmured, looking directly into her hazel eyes. "I fought for you."

Emma’s breath caught. "Gabriel... I'm just a maid. I’m a woman with no status, no money—"

"Stop," Gabriel interrupted gently, placing his thumb against her lips. "Never say that again."

He leaned closer, his scent of cedarwood and dark tobacco enveloping her senses.

"For two years, this house was a tomb," Gabriel said softly. "I was dead inside. My daughters were fading away. And then you walked through those front doors with your quiet grace, your warm heart, and your gentle soul. You brought light back into my life. You brought my daughter back to me."

He took her bandaged hand and pressed a soft, reverent kiss against her knuckles.

"You are not a maid, Emma," Gabriel declared with fierce tenderness. "You are the heart of this house. And if you will have me... I want you to be the heart of my life."

Tears welled up in Emma’s eyes, shining like diamonds in the morning light. "Gabriel... are you sure? A man like you... with a woman like me?"

Gabriel smiled—a true, brilliant smile that transformed his intimidating face into one of pure, breathless devotion.

"I have never been more sure of anything in my entire life," he whispered.

Gabriel leaned in and brought his lips down to hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a sweet, consuming warmth that erased every ghost, every fear, and every tear that had ever fallen inside those stone walls. Emma melted against him, wrapping her arms around his neck, giving herself entirely to the man who had claimed her heart.
