Chapter 2 - The Crimson LedgerTwo days later, the storm that had been brewing over Lake Michigan finally broke.

Heavy, wet November snow lashed against the tall windows of the Lake Forest estate, turning the forty acres of surrounding forest into a blurred, freezing whiteout. Inside the mansion, the heating system hummed a steady, comforting rhythm, but the atmosphere was thick with an entirely different kind of pressure.

In the surveillance room, Dominic sat staring at the monitor displaying Julian’s study.

It was 1:15 in the afternoon. Julian sat by the south window, wrapped in a dark cashmere throw, his eyes fixed on the driving snow outside. Grace Miller was moving quietly around the room, dusting the mahogany bookshelves and straightening the heavy velvet curtains.

On the center monitor, Dominic watched something he had never seen before.

Julian turned his wheelchair away from the window, moving toward the small writing desk where Grace was currently wiping down the surface. He rolled right up beside her, stopping just inches from her skirts.

Grace paused, rag in hand. She didn't step back. She looked down at him with patient, steady eyes.

Julian reached out his right hand—the one that still functioned with steady precision—and placed a small, leather-bound notebook on the edge of the desk. It was an old ledger, its cover worn thin, bound with a faded red ribbon.

Grace looked at the book, then up at Julian.

Julian tapped the cover once with his index finger. Then, he spoke.

It wasn't a whisper. It wasn't the strained, raspy grunts he usually used when forced to answer doctors. It was a low, clear, resonant voice—a voice Dominic hadn't heard in full sentences since the night of the explosion fourteen years ago.

"Read page forty-two," Julian said.

His voice sounded like stones rolling across dry earth—unused, rusted, but carrying a sharp, undeniable intelligence.

On the other end of the intercom in the security room, Dominic gripped the edge of his console so hard his knuckles turned white. He leaned closer to the monitor, holding his breath.

Grace slowly reached out and picked up the ledger. She opened it, turning the crisp, yellowed pages until she reached the middle of the book.

As her eyes scanned the lines of handwritten text, her expression shifted from calm curiosity to absolute, frozen shock.

Her breath hitched. She looked down at Julian, her face pale.

"This isn't a story," Grace whispered, her voice carrying clearly through the hidden microphone above the desk. "This... this is an accounting ledger."

"It's not an accounting ledger," Julian replied, his voice steady and cold. "It's a confession. Every shell company, every payoff to city officials, every illicit real estate acquisition routed through south-side commercial properties over the last twelve years. My uncle Victor’s empire isn't built on business, Grace. It’s built on blood, extortion, and the property titles he stole from families who couldn't fight back."

In the security room, Dominic stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the floor.

Victor.

For years, Dominic had believed his uncle Victor was merely a difficult, abrasive partner in the syndicate—a senior family member who handled West Side operations with an aggressive hand. Dominic had kept him close because in the syndicate world, family ties were supposed to matter more than greed.

Julian had just blown that illusion to pieces.

On the screen, Julian continued, leaning forward in his chair. "Victor didn't just take our father’s business after the explosion, Grace. He engineered the car bomb. I found the proof in our father’s private safe six months after the accident, before Victor paralyzed me and locked me in this east wing under the guise of 'medical protection.' I couldn't walk. I couldn't run. So I wrote it down. Every name. Every date. Every crime."

Grace clutched the red-ribboned ledger against her chest, her eyes wide with sudden, terrifying realization. "If Victor knows you have this..."

"He doesn't know," Julian said. "Not yet. But he’s coming here tonight."

Dominic didn't wait to hear another word. He slammed his hand down on the master console, unlocked the bottom drawer of his desk, and drew his heavy Sig Sauer P226. He checked the magazine with a practiced, lethal click.

Before Dominic could reach the door to the east wing, a piercing, high-pitched alarm echoed through the entire mansion.

The perimeter gates had been breached.
