Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Local 419Silence fell over the study, heavy and suffocating. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass, rain lashed against the skyscraper, reflecting the red and blue neon lights of Michigan Avenue far below.

Ellie stared at the yellowed dossier on the desk as if it were a coiled snake.

"Your father," she whispered, her voice laced with venom. "Your father ruined my family. He let my dad die with a broken heart so he could buy his way into real estate."

"Yes," Nico admitted without hesitation. He didn't offer excuses. He didn't look away. "My father was a hard man who made dark bargains to build the Vitali empire. Curtis Vaughn was a young, ambitious prosecutor back then. Vaughn found the embezzlement coming out of Local 419, but instead of prosecuting my father, he made a deal. He buried the evidence against Dominic Vitali, framed Frank Kelly to close the case, and took a two-million-dollar cut to launch his political career."

Ellie pressed her hand against her stomach, feeling a wave of nausea. "And my mother spent twenty years working double shifts in a laundry mat to pay off debts my father never owed."

"I didn't know the truth about Local 419 until three years ago," Nico said softly, stepping closer to her. "When I took over after my father died, I found the hidden ledgers in this very room. I tried to find your family, Ellie. But your mother had changed her name, moved out of the old neighborhood, and dropped off the grid. I set up an anonymous trust fund to cover her medical expenses through her hospital... where do you think her dialysis bills have been coming from for the last two years?"

Ellie froze. Her head snapped up, shock washing over her face. "The Mercy Health Foundation... that was you?"

"It was the only way I could repay a fraction of the debt my father owed yours," Nico said. "Now, Curtis Vaughn wants to use those old, buried records to blackmail me. He recruited Vanessa Sinclair—a woman whose family lost their fortune in a bad development deal—to marry me, gain access to my private safe, and retrieve the original ledger so Vaughn can destroy it once and for all and frame me for the old crime."

"And what happens to Vanessa once she gets it?" Ellie asked.

"Once she hands the ledger to Vaughn, Vaughn will expose an anonymous tip to the feds, claiming I murdered Frank Kelly to keep him quiet," Nico explained coldly. "Vanessa gets half my estate in a quick divorce, Vaughn gets total political immunity, and I spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary."

Before Ellie could process his words, a soft electronic chirp sounded from a small monitor on Nico's desk.

Nico looked down. The night-vision camera feed from the outer study lit up.

Vanessa was in the room.

She was wearing a silk robe, moving silently across the Persian rug toward the main executive desk. She pulled out a small electronic skimming device from her pocket, inserting it into the digital lock of the floor safe beneath the desk.

Ellie stepped beside Nico, watching the screen with bated breath. "She's opening it."

"She thinks she is," Nico murmured. "What she doesn't know is that the safe she's opening is a honeypot. It contains forged ledgers that tie Curtis Vaughn directly to three offshore dummy accounts in the Cayman Islands. Accounts I opened in his name two weeks ago."

On the screen, Vanessa successfully bypassed the lock. She reached inside, pulled out a thick leather binder, and let out a triumphant gasp that was picked up by the hidden microphone. She quickly opened her robe, tucked the binder into her silk sash, restored the safe's lock, and slipped out of the room as quietly as a phantom.

Nico leaned over the desk and pressed an intercom button. "Arthur?"

"I’m outside her bedroom door," Arthur’s voice came back crisp and clear over the speaker. "She just walked back into the master suite. She’s currently photographing every page with an encrypted satellite phone."

"Let her finish," Nico commanded. "Whose server is the phone routing to?"

"Curtis Vaughn’s private estate in Lake Forest. It’s dropping straight into his personal server."

"Excellent," Nico said, a dark, victorious smile spreading across his face. "He’ll have the forged documents in five minutes. By tomorrow morning, he’ll think he holds my throat in his hand."

Nico turned back to Ellie. She was standing very close to him now, looking up at him with a mixture of disbelief, lingering resentment, and a strange, undeniable spark of intrigue.

"You're playing a terrifying game, Nico Vitali," she said softly.

"It's the only game I know," he replied. He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing against her cheek, tracing the faint red mark where the rope had bound her hours ago. His touch was unexpectedly tender, sending a sharp shiver down Ellie’s spine. "I spent eleven years protecting a legacy built on blood and lies. But I won't let them destroy your father's memory again, Ellie. I promise you, before this week is over, Frank Kelly’s name will be cleared in every newspaper in Chicago."

Ellie looked into his dark, fierce eyes, feeling the heat of his body radiating against hers. For the first time since she had been dragged into the room at Asheford Grove, she felt a profound sense of safety.

"Why me, Nico?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the rain. "Why did Vanessa request me by name for the catering team?"

Nico’s eyes darkened. "Because Vanessa is meticulous. She wanted the daughter of Frank Kelly in the building tonight. If something went wrong—if the safe was tampered with or if a distraction was needed—she was going to plant a stolen piece of jewelry in your apron and pin the whole breach on you. She wanted you to be the fall girl one last time."

Ellie’s hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. "She really is a monster."

"She’s about to learn what happens when you poke a sleeping lion," Nico said. He stepped back, reaching for his coat. "Get some sleep, Ellie. You're staying here tonight. My men are guarding the floor. Tomorrow, the trap snaps shut."
