Chapter 4 - A Banquet of BetrayalsForty-eight hours after the grand wedding, the Drake Hotel hosted the annual Chicago Heritage Gala—the most exclusive event of the autumn social calendar.

The grand ballroom was a sea of black ties, silk evening gowns, and glittering diamonds. High-profile prosecutors, federal judges, mob financiers, and corporate barons moved through the room under massive crystal chandeliers.
Vanessa Vitali sat at the head table beside Nico, wearing a stunning emerald velvet dress that offset her blonde hair perfectly. She radiated confidence. Every few minutes, she reached over to gently pat Nico's hand, offering the room a picture of blissful, newlywed devotion.
Standing in the shadowy alcove near the kitchen service doors, dressed in an elegant black evening dress provided by Nico, stood Ellie Kelly. She carried no trays tonight. She was flanked by Arthur Barone, her eyes fixed entirely on the head table.
"You nervous, kid?" Arthur asked softly, taking a quiet sip of club soda.
"A little," Ellie admitted, adjusting the small, hidden earpiece tucked discreetly beneath her hair. "What if Vaughn doesn't take the bait?"
"Vaughn is an arrogant bastard who thinks he’s smarter than the whole city," Arthur replied dryly. "He received the stolen ledger from Vanessa yesterday morning. Right now, he thinks he has enough leverage to force Nico to surrender fifty percent of the South Side port development shares to his shell company. Watch him."
Across the room, Curtis Vaughn stepped up to the podium. As the evening's keynote speaker and primary patron of the Heritage Foundation, he was greeted with thunderous applause.
Vaughn adjusted his glasses, smiling down at the crowd. "Thank you. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, we celebrate the history, the strength, and the future of our great city. But true strength requires integrity. It requires bringing light to the dark corners of our past."
Vanessa leaned toward Nico at the head table, whispering softly, "He sounds so inspiring, doesn't he, darling?"
"Truly," Nico said, his voice flat, his fingers lightly tapping against his wine glass.
Vaughn continued, his tone taking on a dramatic, somber weight. "Recently, evidence was brought to my attention regarding a dark chapter in Chicago's labor history—the infamous Local 419 pension scandal twenty years ago."
A sudden whisper cascaded through the room. City officials straightened in their chairs.
"For decades," Vaughn boomed into the microphone, "an innocent man, Frank Kelly, bore the shame of that corruption. But new documents handed to my office just yesterday prove that the true culprit was none other than the late Dominic Vitali... and his son, Nico Vitali, who continues to manage those stolen funds through offshore accounts!"
Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Photographers immediately turned their long lenses toward Nico.
Vanessa put her hand over her mouth, playing the shocked, devastated wife to perfection. "Nico... oh my god, what is he talking about?!" she gasped, her eyes wide with simulated horror.
Nico didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He calmly pushed his chair back, stood up, and buttoned his tuxedo jacket.
"Mr. Vaughn," Nico’s calm, powerful voice echoed clearly across the silent ballroom without the aid of a microphone. "Are you referring to the leather binder you received via encrypted satellite feed from my home safe forty-eight hours ago?"
Vaughn’s smile faltered slightly. "The source of the evidence is confidential, Mr. Vitali, but the electronic signatures speak for themselves!"
"They certainly do," Nico said, walking slowly toward the center of the stage. He raised his hand, signaling Arthur.
Instantly, the massive projection screens behind the podium—which had been displaying the Heritage Foundation logo—flickered and changed.
Instead of financial documents, a crystal-clear high-definition audio visual recording lit up the screens.
It was the video feed from the bridal suite at Asheford Grove.
Vanessa’s voice roared through the ballroom speakers, clear as a bell:
"Tonight, I’m going to destroy that man’s life. And nobody will ever believe a girl who carries trays."
The room went deathly silent.
Vanessa’s face drained of every drop of color. She scrambled to her feet, her chair violently tipping over behind her. "Turn that off! That's fake! That's an AI deepfake!"
The video continued. It showed Vanessa tying Ellie Kelly’s wrists with florist rope. Then came the audio recording of the phone call between Vanessa and Curtis Vaughn from an hour prior:
"My mother kept the union files, Curtis. Once the marriage is complete, nobody will question my access to Nico's safe. We'll handle the Kelly problem the same way it was handled twenty years ago."
"And then," Nico said, standing at the base of the stage, pointing up at the screens, "we have the digital audit of those offshore accounts Mr. Vaughn just mentioned."
The screens shifted to display official banking documentation stamped by the Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service.
"The three accounts in the Cayman Islands were not opened by me or my father," Nico announced to the room, turning to face the jaw-dropped audience. "They were opened twenty-one years ago by Curtis Vaughn. They contain six million dollars stolen directly from the Local 419 pension fund. And forty-eight hours ago, my dear wife, Vanessa, attempted to alter the digital timestamps to plant my name on them."
"Lies!" Vaughn screamed, his face flushing deep crimson as he slammed his fist onto the podium. "This is mob trickery! Security! Call the police!"
The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
A dozen uniformed officers and six federal agents in dark suits entered the room, led by the Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
The prosecutor walked straight past Nico, stepped up onto the stage, and pulled a thick warrant from his coat.
"Curtis Vaughn," the prosecutor declared loudly into the microphone. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, and the framing of Frank Kelly."
Two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Vaughn’s arms and forcing them behind his back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Vaughn thrashed furiously, his polished veneer completely shattered. "You can't do this to me! Do you know who I am?! Vanessa, tell them! Tell them!"
Vanessa backed away in sheer panic, heading for the side exit, but two female federal agents intercepted her, pinning her against the wall.
"Vanessa Sinclair-Vitali," the agent said, clicking handcuffs over her manicured wrists. "You are under arrest as a co-conspirator."
As Vanessa was escorted past the head table in tears, she caught sight of Ellie Kelly standing beside Nico.

Ellie stepped forward, looking down at the woman who had bound her wrists two nights ago.
"Nobody believes a girl who carries trays," Ellie said softly, her voice steady and proud. "Until she tells the truth."
