Chapter 1 - The Altar and the Account

The crystal chandeliers of Asheford Grove cascaded a cold, brilliant light over the three hundred wedding guests who had gathered to witness the union of Chicago’s most powerful crime boss and the society woman hailed as an angel. Downstairs, the string quartet played a delicate melody that masked the heavy, palpable tension vibrating beneath the surface of the room. Politicians, judges, union bosses, and developers smiled, raised their champagne glasses, and whispered about the impeccable match. They saw a fairytale wedding; they did not see the battlefield.
Nico Vitali stood before the flower-strung altar, his posture rigid, his dark suit tailored to perfection. His face was a mask of cold, chiseled granite. Fifteen minutes earlier, in the secluded silence of an upstairs suite, he had stood in the shadow of a partially latched door and listened to his bride, Vanessa Sinclair, promise his total destruction. He had heard her cold, calculating voice outline a conspiracy involving forged authority, dormant union accounts, and a mysterious man named Curtis Vaughn. He had even watched her tie up a terrified, innocent waitress named Ellie Kelly, dismissing her life as collateral damage in a much larger game.
Yet, when Vanessa glided down the aisle, radiant in white silk and diamonds that caught the light like frozen tears, Nico did not turn away. When the officiant asked if he took Vanessa to be his lawfully wedded wife, Nico looked straight into her deceitful eyes and spoke the words that bound them together: "I do."
Upstairs, the bridal suite was empty now, save for the faint scent of crushed roses and expensive perfume. But the repercussions of that room were already rippling through the city. Ellie Kelly had slipped away through the service entrance exactly as Nico commanded, her wrists still stinging from the rough florist's rope. She walked fast through the damp Chicago air, ignoring the cold, her mind racing with the contents of the recorded phone call. She knew her father’s name—Thomas Kelly—was buried deep within the files of Local 419, a union hall that had been plundered, broken, and erased from history over a decade ago.
Back at the reception, Arthur Barone, sixty-eight and fiercely loyal to the Vitali family, stood near the grand archway holding two untouched flutes of champagne. His sharp, weathered eyes tracked Nico the moment the ceremony concluded. Arthur took one look at the slight tension in Nico’s jaw and the half-closed fist at his side.
"What happened?" Arthur asked quietly, stepping into Nico’s path as the newly minted couple turned to receive their first wave of congratulations.
Nico didn't blink. His gaze remained fixed on Vanessa, who was laughing gracefully at a joke made by a corrupt appellate judge.
"Our bride is ambitious, Arthur," Nico murmured, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "She thinks she can marry into the throne, inherit the ledger, and burn the house down from the inside out with the help of Curtis Vaughn."
Arthur’s expression darkened instantly. The name Vaughn was poison in Chicago. Decades ago, Curtis Vaughn had been a mid-level bureaucrat who specialized in corporate espionage and institutional theft, eventually sinking his claws into local labor unions.
"Vaughn has been dead to the world for years, hiding behind proxies," Arthur said, his voice tightening. "If Vanessa is tied to him, this isn't just a betrayal of a marriage. It’s an orchestrated takeover of our financial pipelines—starting with Local 419."
"Local 419," Nico repeated, a cold smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "The very ghost Vanessa and Vaughn think they buried. They forgot that some ghosts refuse to stay in the ground, especially when there's a witness left behind."

"The waitress?" Arthur asked, his instincts immediately recognizing the loose thread.
"Ellie Kelly," Nico replied. "Vaughn and Vanessa think her phone was destroyed. They think she's just another frightened girl who will disappear into the night. They underestimated her. And more importantly, they underestimated what happens when you disturb a Kelly in this city."
