Chapter 4 - The Spider’s Web

As the audio file played through the office speakers, the room remained dead silent. Vanessa’s crisp, melodic voice filled the space, detailing how she had systematically integrated herself into the Vitali inner circle, winning the trust of key syndicate captains, and quietly funneling documentation regarding Local 419 into a dormant shell corporation controlled by Curtis Vaughn.

When the recording ended, Arthur Barone let out a low, gravelly sigh, shaking his head.

"Vaughn has been playing a very long game," Arthur muttered, leaning against the edge of the desk. "He couldn't break the Vitali organization through direct force or federal pressure, so he engineered a slow-motion collapse from the inside, using a matrimonial alliance as the trojan horse."

"And Vanessa played her part to perfection," Nico added, his voice chillingly calm. "She made me feel understood. She studied my habits, anticipated my moves, and convinced my captains that she was an asset rather than a liability."

"Except for one detail," Ellie interjected, her voice sharp. "She didn't count on a waitress carrying trays through the bridal suite. She thought she could brush me aside like lint on her white dress."

Nico turned his full attention back to Ellie. "Arrogance is the fatal flaw of people who inherit power without bleeding for it. Vanessa thinks she has won because the wedding ceremony is over and the marriage certificate is signed. She believes she owns half my assets by default of Illinois law."

"Can she do that?" Ellie asked, alarmed. "Can she take your empire?"

"Only if I let her," Nico replied, a cold smile touching his lips. "In the underworld, a marriage built on fraud is null and void before the ink dries on the certificate. But we aren't going to handle this with a quiet divorce or a bullet in the dark. Curtis Vaughn and Vanessa want a war. We are going to give them a trial by public exposure."

Arthur straightened up, his eyes gleaming with tactical interest. "What do you have in mind, boss?"

"Vaughn is hosting a private gala tomorrow night at the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel," Nico said, pacing toward the window that overlooked the glittering skyline of Chicago. "He thinks he’s celebrating the final acquisition of Local 419's remaining assets. He expects me to be blissfully ignorant, waking up as a betrayed husband who has lost his leverage."

"And instead?" Ellie asked, leaning forward.

"Instead, we are going to crash his celebration," Nico said, turning around to face them both. "We are going to bring every single ledger, every forged signature, and every piece of audio evidence—including Thomas Kelly’s exoneration papers, which I suspect Vaughn kept in his private vault as a trophy."

Ellie’s breath caught in her throat. "My father’s exoneration papers? They exist?"

"If Vaughn kept a record of how he framed the union officials, yes," Nico confirmed. "And tomorrow night, we are going to find out."

"It's a trap," Arthur warned, scratching his chin. "Vaughn will have armed security and corrupted judges surrounding him. Walking into the Drake Hotel with a handful of audio clips might not be enough."

Nico walked back to the desk, picked up Ellie’s phone, and handed it back to her.

"It won't just be audio clips," Nico said, his eyes locking onto Ellie. "It will be a firsthand account delivered by the daughter of the man they tried to erase. Miss Kelly, are you ready to help me tear down the people who destroyed your family?"

Ellie looked down at the phone in her hand, then up at the most feared crime boss in Chicago. The fear that had gripped her earlier that evening vanished, replaced by a cold, burning clarity.

"Just point me toward the door," Ellie said.
