Chapter 6 - A Life Reclaimed

Six months later.
The morning sun beamed warmly over Central Park, casting a golden light across the lush green lawns and blooming cherry trees.
Ten-year-old Jamie Bennett ran across the grass in a crisp new red soccer jersey, laughing as he kicked a black-and-white ball toward a makeshift goal post. His cheeks were rosy, his breathing clear and strong—a healthy, vibrant child with a fully healed heart.
Nora sat on a wooden bench at the edge of the lawn, wearing a floral summer dress, watching her brother with a radiant, joyous smile.
Beside her sat Dominic, wearing a dark blue linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking completely relaxed, his arm draped comfortably over the back of the bench behind her shoulders.
In Nora’s lap lay an official document from the State of New York—the formal charter establishing the Arthur Bennett Memorial Foundation for Pediatric Heart Care, funded by forty million dollars restored from Julian Vance’s seized assets. The foundation had already paid for twenty life-saving surgeries for low-income children across the city.
“He’s getting fast,” Dominic remarked, watching Jamie effortlessly score a goal against one of his off-duty bodyguards who was playing goalie.
“He has too much energy now,” Nora laughed softly, turning her head to look at Dominic. “I can barely keep up with him.”
Dominic looked at her, his storm-gray eyes soft with a profound, unshakeable devotion. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a strand of brown hair behind her ear.
“You don’t have to do it alone anymore, Nora,” Dominic whispered.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box, opening it to reveal an breathtaking, flawless oval-cut diamond ring that caught the morning sunlight like a star.
Nora’s breath caught in her throat, her hand pressing against her mouth as tears of happiness rose in her eyes.
“Six months ago, you walked into my life as a shy waitress trying to save her brother,” Dominic said softly, taking her delicate hand in his broad, warm palm. “You proved to be the bravest, most magnificent woman I have ever known. You brought light into a life that was filled only with dark shadows.”
He looked deeply into her hazel eyes.
“Nora Bennett, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
Nora looked at the ring, then at the man who had protected her family, cleared her father’s name, and loved her with every beat of his heart.
“Yes,” Nora sobbed happily, throwing her arms around his neck. “Yes, Dominic! A thousand times yes!”
Dominic let out a rich, warm laugh, pulling her tight against his chest, lifting her slightly off the bench before leaning in to press his lips against hers in a passionate, deep, breathtaking kiss.
