Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

Mr. Vance appeared at the door, looking pale and uncomfortable. “Doctor Thorne, Mr. Vale appointed her as the young mistress’s caretaker this morning—”

“I don't care if Mr. Vale appointed her as the Queen of England!” Thorne snapped, stepping into the room and pulling off his leather gloves. “Miss Vale’s condition is exceptionally delicate. Unqualified hands touching her spine could cause catastrophic spasms!”

He marched over, roughly pushing Clara aside. Clara stepped back quietly, but her gray eyes remained fixed on the doctor with an unwavering, dangerous calm.

She watched as Thorne pulled a small syringe from his kit, filling it with a thick, clear liquid from a vial marked with his proprietary seal.

“What is that injection, Doctor?” Clara asked, her voice calm and remarkably clear.

Thorne paused, turning his head slowly to glare at her as if a cockroach had just spoken to him in fluent French. “I beg your pardon?”

“The medication,” Clara said, stepping forward. “What is the chemical composition of that sedative?”

“That is proprietary medical information, girl,” Thorne sneered, tapping the syringe to clear air bubbles. “It is a specialized nerve-soothing compound tailored specifically for Maya’s spinal trauma. Now stand back and fulfill your duties—which I assume involve sweeping the floor and staying silent.”

“It’s a peripheral neurotoxin,” Clara stated flatly.

The room went dead silent.

Mr. Vance gasped near the doorway. Thorne’s assistants froze, staring at Clara in utter disbelief.

Thorne’s face flushed a deep, ugly red. “What did you just say to me?”

“You are administering heavy muscle relaxants combined with a nerve-blocking agent,” Clara said, her voice rising in steady confidence as her medical instincts took full command. “It doesn't heal her. It artificially paralyzes her peripheral nervous system. When I pressed her fibular nerve notch just now, she had a direct motor reflex. Her spinal cord isn't severed, Dr. Thorne. She has a deep tissue nerve entrapment in her L4 vertebrae that has been held in stasis by those drops!”

“You ignorant, low-class insolent fool!” Thorne roared, stepping toward Clara with his cane raised as if to strike her. “You are a maid! How dare you question my thirty years of medical expertise based on some absurd, uneducated fantasy!”

“She’s right,” a voice rasped from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Adrian Vale stood in the threshold. He had removed his jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing forearms corded with muscle and faint, jagged scars. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on Dr. Thorne.

“Adrian,” Thorne said, quickly altering his tone to one of professional concern. “Thank God you're here. This girl is completely unhinged. She’s giving the child false hope, making insane medical claims—”

“I heard her,” Adrian interrupted coldly. He walked into the room, his heavy steps measured and silent. He stopped right beside Clara, his presence looming over the room like a thundercloud. He looked down at her. “Say it again, Clara. Look me in the eye and say it.”

Clara didn't hesitate. She looked up into the dark, terrifying eyes of the city's most feared man.

“Your daughter can feel pain, Mr. Vale,” Clara said, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. “A person with a severed spinal cord cannot feel deep nerve pressure. She flinched when I touched her leg. She is not paralyzed because her body is broken. She is paralyzed because she is being medicated into immobility.”

Adrian turned his head slowly toward Dr. Thorne. The air in the room became instantly suffocating, pressure dropping as if a storm had entered the house.

“Adrian, this is preposterous!” Thorne stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead. “She is a domestic servant! Are you going to take the word of a peasant girl over a chief surgeon?”

Adrian reached out. In a flash of movement so fast Thorne couldn't even scream, Adrian caught the doctor by the throat, slamming him violently against the tall mahogany bookshelf!

Books tumbled to the floor. Thorne gasped for air, his feet dangling two inches off the rug.

“I have paid you two hundred thousand dollars a year for six years, Marcus,” Adrian whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the windowpanes vibrate. “I trusted you with my daughter’s life. If I find out you have lied to me... I will not put you in prison. I will bury you beneath the foundation of this house.”

“Father!” Maya cried out from her chair, her small voice trembling with shock.

Adrian released Thorne instantly. The doctor crumpled to the floor, coughing violently, clutching his neck.

Adrian didn't look at him. He turned to Clara, his eyes burning with an intense, wild hope that he had spent six years trying to bury.

“If I stop Thorne’s medicine,” Adrian said, his voice shaking slightly, “what happens?”

“The pain will return first,” Clara answered honestly. “As the drugs leave her system, her trapped nerves will wake up. It will be terrifying for her. She will need physical therapy, hot baths, and someone to massage the scar tissue every single hour.”

Adrian looked at his daughter, then back at Clara.

“You will do it,” Adrian declared. “You will reside in this room. You will oversee her care. If you need equipment, doctors, or medicine from anywhere in the world, speak the name and it will be here in hours.”

He stepped closer to Clara, reaching down to gently touch her chin, lifting her face so she had no choice but to see the absolute gravity of his vow.

“Save my daughter, Clara,” Adrian whispered. “And my life is yours.”
