Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Web

For three weeks, Blackwater House became a battleground of quiet agony and fierce hope.

Clara moved into the suite entirely. Under her strict orders, Dr. Thorne’s amber bottles were locked in a steel safe in Adrian’s private study, awaiting independent chemical analysis.

The withdrawal was brutal. As the nerve-blocking compounds slowly drained from Maya’s system, her lower back felt as if it were being seared by iron irons.

Night after night, Maya screamed into her pillows, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. And night after night, Clara stayed by her side.

Clara bathed the child’s back in steaming water infused with Epsom salts. She spent hours using her small, strong hands to break down the dense, calcified scar tissue along Maya’s lower spine, using deep-tissue friction techniques she had studied endlessly. When Maya cried, Clara sang old folk lullabies her mother had taught her. When Maya wanted to give up, Clara held her hands and reminded her of the world outside the third-floor window.

Adrian was always there.

No matter how late his business ran—no matter how many dark meetings he held in the subterranean vaults beneath the mansion—he returned to the third floor every single night. He would sit in the armchair in the corner, watching in silent awe as Clara gently worked on his daughter.

A deep, unspoken bond began to form in the quiet hours between midnight and dawn.

Adrian watched Clara’s patience, her fierce intelligence, and her unwavering grace. He saw how she treated him not as a dangerous crime lord to be feared, but as a man who desperately loved his child. For the first time in six years, the cold stone around Adrian’s heart began to crack.

On the twenty-first night, as Clara was wrapping Maya’s lower back in hot wool compresses, the door opened.

It was not Adrian.

Selene March walked into the suite, dressed in an exquisite black lace gown, a glass of dark red wine held loosely in her manicured hand. Her sharp blue eyes swept over the room, landing on Clara with pure, unadulterated venom.

“Still playing doctor, little maid?” Selene drawled, stepping over to the bed. “The entire house talks about you, you know. They say you’ve hypnotized Adrian with your pathetic little sob story.”

“Miss March,” Clara said politely, standing up and wiping her hands on a towel. “Maya is resting. Please keep your voice down.”

“Don't tell me what to do in this house, girl,” Selene hissed, stepping closer, her expensive perfume choking the air. “You think you’re clever, don't you? You think by pretending to 'cure' Adrian’s broken little brat, he’ll make you the mistress of Blackwater House?”

Maya stirred on the bed, her brow furrowing in distress.

“Leave, Selene,” Maya whimpered, clutching her blanket. “I don't like you. You smell like mean flowers.”

Selene’s eyes flashed with rage. She reached out toward Maya’s blanket, but before her fingers could touch the fabric, Clara stepped directly between them.

“Do not touch her,” Clara said softly. Her voice lacked any fear. It was cold, steel-lined, and absolute.

Selene chuckled darkly. “You have no idea what world you’ve walked into, Clara Rowan. You think Adrian Vale is a prince? He is a monster who slaughters his enemies without blinking. And Dr. Thorne was appointed by my family’s council.”

Clara’s eyes narrowed. “Your family?”

Selene leaned in, whispering viciously into Clara’s ear. “Adrian was too powerful when his wife was alive. He was unified, sharp, dangerous. But a grieving man with a paralyzed child? A man obsessed with finding cures in dark rooms? He was weak. He was distracted. My family controlled the shipping lanes for six years while Adrian spent millions chasing ghosts.”

Clara felt a wave of cold horror wash over her.

It hadn't just been Dr. Thorne’s greed. It was a calculated, syndicate-backed conspiracy to keep Adrian Vale broken and preoccupied with his daughter’s illness so rival families could carve up his empire.

“You poisoned a six-year-old child,” Clara whispered, her body trembling with righteous fury. “You kept her trapped in a bed for six years just to control her father.”

“No one will ever believe you,” Selene smiled coldly, raising her glass to her lips. “A maid’s word against the March family? Tomorrow, Dr. Thorne’s private security team will arrive to remove you from this house. And if you attempt to speak...”

Selene leaned closer, her eyes glittering like ice. “Your little brother in the city sanatorium will have a very sudden, very fatal accident.”

Before Clara could react, a deep voice thundered from the dark hallway outside.

May you like

“She won't need to speak, Selene.”

Adrian stepped out of the shadows.
