Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Caruso Empire

The Grand Hall of the Caruso mansion was suffused with heavy, suffocating tension.

The massive crystal chandelier cast brilliant light over the double curved marble staircase. At the center of the room stood Fallon Caruso. His face was carved from dark granite, his gray eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage.

Beside him sat his daughter, Valentina.

The fifteen-year-old girl was pale, her hands shaking violently as she stared at her phone. Her social media accounts were exploding with tens of thousands of messages calling her a monster, a bully, and a sociopath. News channels were already broadcasting the clip on national television, linking the Caruso name to horrific domestic abuse.

Standing near the fireplace was Sofia Caruso—Fallon’s elegant, dark-haired sister, dressed in black silk, her face a mask of faux concern.

"It’s an outrage, Fallon!" Sofia spat, gesturing toward Sloan as the guards marched her into the room. "This ungrateful little rat took a video inside our home to humiliate our family! She’s trying to extort us!"

Sloan stood at the center of the marble floor—the same floor where she had been forced to her knees hours earlier.

She wore her stained maid’s apron, her hands held tightly in front of her, clutching the leather-bound ledger wrapped in a cotton cleaning cloth.

Fallon stepped down from the staircase landing, stopping three feet away from Sloan.

"Did you post that video, Miss Brennan?" Fallon asked. His voice was unnaturally quiet, the kind of quiet that presaged a execution.

Sloan looked directly into his eyes. She didn't bow her head. She didn't look away.

"No, Mr. Caruso," Sloan said clearly. "I didn't post it."

"Liar!" Valentina shrieked, jumping up from the sofa, her face flushed with humiliation and rage. "Who else would post it?! You wanted to ruin my life because I made you clean up the wine! Dad, tell the guards to break her phone! Throw her out!"

"Be quiet, Valentina," Fallon growled without looking at his daughter.

Valentina flinched as if struck. "Dad!"

"I said be quiet!" Fallon roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings like a thunderbolt.

Valentina dropped back onto the sofa, shocked into silence, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Fallon turned his dark gaze back to Sloan. "If you didn't post it, who did?"

"It doesn't matter who posted the video, Mr. Caruso," Sloan said, her voice steady and echoing across the grand room. "What matters is why that video was filmed in the first place."

Sofia stepped forward, her eyes narrowing venomously. "Fallon, don't listen to this garbage! She's a thief and a domestic servant! Guards, take her out to the courtyard!"

"Nobody moves," Fallon commanded coldly. His eyes remained locked on Sloan. "Speak, Miss Brennan."

Sloan took a deep breath. She unraveled the white cotton cloth in her hands, revealing the heavy, blood-stained leather ledger.

Sofia Caruso’s face instantly drained of all color.

Consigliere Victor Vane’s hand subtly twitched toward the inner pocket of his suit jacket.

"What is that?" Fallon asked, frowning.

"This is your late wife’s personal journal, Mr. Caruso," Sloan said, holding the ledger out toward him. "I found it two hours ago in the hidden compartment beneath the desk in the east wing study."

Fallon’s eyes went wide. "Elena’s..."

"She didn't die of an illness, Mr. Caruso," Sloan said, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. "Five years ago, your wife was murdered. She was systematically poisoned over two years with synthetic neurotoxins."

"Nonsense!" Sofia shrieked, her voice shrill with rising panic. "She’s insane! Fallon, she opened Elena’s private room! She violated our family's sanctuary!"

"Shut up, Sofia!" Fallon snapped, reaching out with a trembling hand to take the heavy ledger from Sloan.

He opened the cover. His gray eyes scanned the elegant handwriting of his dead wife.

As he flipped through the pages, reading the dates, the chemical names, the wire transfers to Dr. Aris, and the detailed records of Aegis Logistics, the air in the Grand Hall seemed to freeze solid.

"...Fallon thinks I am suffering from early-stage ALS... He doesn't know that his sister, Sofia, and Consigliere Vane are paying Dr. Aris twenty thousand dollars a month to administer synthetic neurotoxins..."

Fallon’s breath hitched in his chest. His hands shook so violently the heavy ledger nearly slipped from his fingers.

He looked up from the book, his eyes turning toward his sister, Sofia, and his trusted consigliere, Victor Vane.

The grief in Fallon’s eyes vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying hellfire.

"Sofia..." Fallon whispered, his voice vibrating with apocalyptic wrath. "Victor..."

Vane realized the game was over.

With blinding speed, Vane pulled a silenced 9mm pistol from his jacket and pointed it straight at Fallon’s heart!

"Don't move, Fallon!" Vane shouted!

Valentina screamed, covering her head!

"You fool!" Sofia yelled at Vane, pulling her own revolver from her purse. "Shoot him now! We have the offshore accounts! We take the girl and run!"

Before Vane could pull the trigger, the massive glass doors of the grand entrance exploded inward!
