Chapter 5 - The War in the Grand Ballroom

GLASS SHATTERED LIKE A THOUSAND DIAMONDS!

A tactical flashbang grenade bounced across the marble floor, exploding in a blinding flash of white light and a deafening roar!

BANG-FLASH!

Sofia screamed, clutching her eyes! Vane stumbled backward, his gunshot going wild—PTT!—the bullet embedding itself deep into the mahogany paneling near the fireplace!

Through the smoke and flying glass, tactical federal officers in black body armor poured into the Grand Hall!

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!"

At the front of the tactical stack was Special Agent Julian Mercer.

He didn't draw his weapon toward Fallon. He sprinted straight through the smoke toward Sloan, throwing his broad body in front of her as Vane tried to acquire a target through the haze!

"I've got you!" Julian shouted, pulling Sloan behind the massive marble pillar near the staircase!

"Julian!" Sloan gasped, clinging to his tactical vest.

Vane fired wildly into the smoke—PTT! PTT!—trying to reach the rear service exit.

Fallon Caruso didn't take cover.

Like an unleashed titan, Fallon walked through the smoke toward Vane. He ignored the bullets whipping past his ears. When Vane swung his pistol toward Fallon’s chest, Fallon grabbed Vane’s wrist with a sickening CRACK!

Vane screamed in agony as his wrist bone shattered. The pistol clattered to the marble floor.

Fallon grabbed Vane by the throat, lifting the fifty-year-old lawyer off his feet with a single arm, driving him brutally backward into the stone fireplace!

"You poisoned my wife!" Fallon roared, his fingers digging into Vane’s windpipe, his face contorted in demonic fury. "You murdered Elena in my own house!"

"Fallon! Stop!" Julian shouted, stepping out from behind the pillar with his badge raised. "Let the law take him! If you kill him now, you spend the rest of your life in a federal pen!"

Fallon glared at Julian, his gray eyes burning with bloodlust. "Who the hell are you?!"

"Special Agent Mercer, FBI Waterfront Task Force," Julian said firmly, keeping his weapon steady. "Drop him, Caruso! We have the ledger! We have the Aegis accounts! It’s over!"

Fallon looked at Vane’s blue, suffocating face. He looked at Julian, then turned his gaze toward his daughter, Valentina, who was cowering under the sofa, sobbing hysterically in absolute terror.

Fallon let out a low, guttural roar and slammed Vane onto the marble floor.

Federal tactical officers instantly swarmed Vane, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs over his wrists.

Across the room, two officers tackled Sofia Caruso to the floor as she tried to crawl toward the garden doors, cuffing her arms while she screamed curses at her brother.

"Fallon! Please! I’m your sister!" Sofia shrieked as she was pulled to her feet. "It was Vane’s idea! He forced me!"

"Get her out of my sight," Fallon said, his voice completely dead, devoid of any warmth or humanity.

The federal officers hauled Sofia and Vane out of the mansion, their furious shouts fading into the rainy night.

The Grand Hall fell quiet, save for the sound of rain pouring through the shattered front doors and the quiet, ragged sobs of Valentina Caruso.

Fallon walked slowly toward the sofa. He knelt on the floor—the same floor where Sloan had knelt hours earlier.

He reached under the furniture, pulling his shaking, weeping fifteen-year-old daughter into his arms.

"Dad..." Valentina sobbed, burying her face into her father's chest. "Aunt Sofia... she told me Mom hated you... she told me you let her die..."

"I know, baby," Fallon whispered, tears finally slipping down his harsh, weathered cheeks as he held his daughter tight. "I know. They lied to both of us."

Fallon looked up across the ruined hall.

Sloan stood beside Julian near the marble pillar. Her maid’s apron was torn, her hair wild, her scraped hands resting against Julian’s arm.

Fallon stood up slowly, keeping his arm wrapped securely around his daughter’s shoulders. He walked across the room until he stood directly in front of Sloan.

For the first time in his life, Fallon Caruso—the king of the East Coast underground—bowed his head to a domestic worker.

"Miss Brennan," Fallon said, his deep voice trembling with raw, profound emotion. "You saved my daughter from a life of venom. You gave me back my wife’s memory. There are no words in any language that can repay what you did tonight."

May you like

Sloan looked at the feared mafia boss, then at the weeping young girl beside him. The anger that had burned in her chest since dinner slowly dissolved into a quiet, profound grace.

"Just be a father to her, Mr. Caruso," Sloan said softly. "That’s all your wife ever wanted."
