Chapter 4 - The Shadow of SuspicionThe realization hit like a cold wave.

Inside the private office of the Moretti compound, Marcus, Camila, and Gianni stood around a large glass table displaying the digital forensic timeline of the past seventy-two hours.
"It makes sense," Gianni explained, tapping a screen displaying surveillance footage from the Brooklyn shelter. "Dominic Valenti knew Adrien Vale was getting careless. Dominic suspected Adrien might fail or that Marcus’s private auditors would catch the error later. So he leaked the draft to Camila, knowing her father’s history and her brilliant legal mind."
"Dominic counted on me being desperate enough to bring it to Marcus," Camila realized, pacing back and forth across the Persian rug. "He knew Marcus’s pride. He knew if a homeless woman exposed his chief counsel, Marcus would either pay her off or keep her close. Dominic wanted a wild card inside this house to create chaos among the board."
Marcus sat behind his heavy oak desk, his jaw set, his fingers intertwined. He didn't look angry at Camila; his gaze was entirely fixed on protecting her.
"They used you as an unwitting pawn," Marcus said, his deep voice heavy with concern. "They didn't care if you succeeded or failed. If you failed, they got the empire. If you succeeded, they created a rift between me and my board."
"Except their plan backfired," Camila said, stopping before his desk, leaning over to meet his eyes. "Because instead of creating chaos, we united the board. They didn't count on us actually getting married. They didn't count on me completely rewriting the entire trust to solidify your position."
Marcus looked up at her, reaching out to touch her hand. The gesture was instinctual now, a natural seeking of her presence. "You are in severe danger, Camila. Sal Valenti realizes now that you aren't a pawn. You are the queen on my board. They will try to eliminate you."
"Let them try," Camila said softly, her eyes flashing with a fierce, unbreakable spirit. "My father spent his life running from men like Valenti. I’m done running, Marcus."
Over the next three weeks, the dynamic between Marcus and Camila shifted dramatically. What had begun as a cold contract of convenience evolved into an intense, unspoken partnership.
They worked late into the night in the estate’s grand library, reviewing shipping manifests, corporate structures, and land deeds. Camila found three more hidden tax traps and exposed two corrupt dock managers who were skimming profits for the Valenti family. Marcus, in turn, ensured that Camila lacked for nothing. He bought her an entire wardrobe of fine clothes, restored her father’s legacy by purchasing back his old office in Red Hook, and assigned his best men to protect her twenty-four hours a day.
One evening, as rain lashed against the tall glass windows of the library, Camila fell asleep at the large mahogany desk, her head resting on a stack of financial reports.
Marcus walked into the room carrying a warm cup of tea. Seeing her asleep, his stern expression softened completely. He walked over quietly, setting the cup down, and stood over her for a long moment.
He gently picked her up in his arms. Camila stirred slightly, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck, her face nestling into the warm crook of his shoulder.
"Marcus?" she murmured sleepily.
"I've got you," he whispered softly, carrying her across the room toward the soft leather sofa near the roaring fire.
He laid her down gently, pulling a plush cashmere blanket over her shoulders. As he began to pull back, Camila’s hand reached out, her soft fingers catching his wrist.
"Stay," she whispered, her hazel eyes heavy with sleep, searching his face in the dim amber light of the fireplace.
Marcus hesitated for a second, then sat down on the edge of the sofa beside her. He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a loose strand of dark hair away from her face.
"I spent my whole life thinking that trust was a liability," Marcus said, his voice a low, rough rumble. "My father taught me that everyone has a price. But you... you came into my life with nothing, and you gave me everything."
Camila looked up at him, her heart beating a fast, heavy rhythm against her chest. "I didn't have nothing, Marcus. I had my integrity. And now... I have you."
Marcus leaned down slowly, giving her ample time to pull away. But Camila didn't pull away. She reached up, her hand cupping the back of his neck, pulling him down until his lips met hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and electric—a silent confession of two lonely souls finding an anchor in the middle of a storm. When Marcus finally pulled back, his breath was shallow, his hazel eyes burning with a dark, fierce devotion.
"I will never let anyone hurt you, Camila," Marcus swore against her lips. "I swear it on my life."
