Chapter 4 - The Trap Closes

By midnight, the heavy oak doors of the Blackwell estate had swung shut on the last departing limousine. The rain continued to lash against the grand entrance, turning the gravel drive into a slick, black mirror.

Senator Richard Caldwell stood in the private study on the second floor, pouring a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. His tie was loosened, and a triumphant grin stretched across his face. The evening had been a financial triumph; his campaign chest had swelled by two million dollars.

The double doors swung open without a knock.

Senator Caldwell frowned, turning around. "Preston, I told you to wait in the—"

He stopped.

It wasn't Preston.

Viktor Vance walked into the study, flanked by two armed guards. Behind them walked Kate Bennett, her arm in a temporary sling, followed by Marisol Vega carrying a laptop.

"Vance," Senator Caldwell said, forcing a practiced, oily smile. "To what do I owe the pleasure? If this is about the harbor zoning dispute, we can discuss it at my office on Monday."

"There is no Monday, Richard," Vance said, walking straight to the mahogany desk and pouring himself a drink from the senator's decanter. "At least, not the kind you're used to."

Preston rushed into the study from the adjoining bedroom, his face flushed with panic. "Dad! They’re crazy! They broke into the server room—they stole—"

"Quiet, boy," Vance snapped, his voice cutting through the room like a razor.

Kate stepped forward, pulling the small black flash drive from her pocket and placing it squarely in the middle of the senator's desk.

"What is this theatrical nonsense?" Senator Caldwell sneered, looking down at the drive. "A disgruntled employee stealing files? I'll have you arrested before you reach the end of the driveway. My district attorney—"

"Your district attorney is currently being woken up by federal marshals in handcuffs," Vance interrupted calmly. "Along with the chief of police, three municipal judges, and the head of the port authority. They all received copies of what’s on that drive ten minutes ago."

Senator Caldwell’s face went chalk white. "You're bluffing."

Marisol opened the laptop on the desk and pressed play.

The screen illuminated the dark study with the high-definition footage of Preston breaking Kate’s arm in the library, followed by audio recordings of Senator Caldwell bragging about fixing murder investigations and laundering developer bribes through the estate's accounts.

Preston stared at the screen, trembling violently. "Dad... I didn't mean... she wouldn't listen—"

Senator Caldwell raised a hand to strike his son, but Vance’s guard caught his wrist mid-air with an iron grip.

"The game is over, Senator," Vance said, setting his glass down. "By sunrise, your name will be mud, your assets seized, and your dynasty erased."
