Chapter 5 - The Healing HeartBack at the private pediatric recovery suite, Daniel was sitting up in bed, happily eating a bowl of vanilla ice cream while watching cartoons on the wall-mounted television.

Elena sat in a plush armchair beside the bed, reading a brightly colored storybook aloud while Daniel pointed eagerly at the pictures. Her bruises were fading into pale yellows and greens, and the bandage over her eyebrow had been replaced by a small, neat strip of medical tape.

The door opened softly, and Gabriel stepped inside, carrying a small leather case and a bouquet of fresh white lilies.

Daniel looked up, beaming. "Dad! Look, Miss Elena is reading me the dragon book!"

Gabriel smiled—a genuine, warm smile that completely transformed his harsh features. He walked over, kissing the top of Daniel’s head. "I see that, champ. How’s your chest feeling?"

"Strong!" Daniel declared, flexing a tiny, skinny arm. "Dr. Harrison said if I eat all my ice cream, I can go home tomorrow!"

"Is that right?" Gabriel chuckled, looking over at Elena, who offered a soft, knowing smile.

"He’s recovering remarkably fast," Elena said, setting the book down. "Stubbornness must run in the family."

"It’s a survival trait," Gabriel replied quietly. He turned to Elena, his expression turning serious as he placed the leather case on the bedside table. "Elena. Outside."

Puzzled, Elena followed Gabriel out into the private hallway, where the afternoon sunlight streamed through high arched windows.

Gabriel opened the leather case. Inside sat a set of house keys engraved with an ornate Finch crest, alongside official employment documents bearing the title Chief of Estate Security and Personal Family Guardian.

"What is this?" Elena asked, looking up at him.

"My estate on Long Island is too big for just guards and servants," Gabriel explained, his dark eyes steady and intense. "It needs someone who knows what loyalty looks like. Someone who isn't afraid of shadows. I want you to head my household security and personal detail for Daniel."

Elena stared at the keys. She thought of her cramped apartment in Queens, her back-breaking double shifts, and the constant, crushing weight of debt and fear. Then she thought of little Daniel’s smile, and the quiet, fierce respect she saw burning in Gabriel Moretti’s eyes.

"You're offering me a job," Elena whispered. "After everything."

"I'm offering you a safe harbor," Gabriel corrected her, his hand reaching out to gently touch her arm—a warm, steady anchor. "And if anyone ever tries to touch you or my son again, they won't even make it past the front gates."

Elena looked down at the keys, then back up at Gabriel. A slow, genuine smile spread across her face. "I hope you have good coffee at that estate, Mr. Moretti. Because I'm terrible at drinking bad brews."

Gabriel laughed—a rich, booming sound that echoed down the hospital corridor, signaling the end of the war and the beginning of something entirely new.
