Chapter 6 - A New DawnSix months later.

The Moretti Estate on the North Shore of Long Island was bathed in the golden glow of a late spring afternoon. The sprawling lawns were impeccably manicured, and white roses bloomed in wild abundance along the stone pathways.

In the center of the main courtyard, six-year-old Daniel was running across the grass, kicking a soccer ball toward a small net while a golden retriever puppy chased frantically behind him.

"Pass it to Elena!" Daniel shouted, laughing.

Elena Cruz—dressed in a sharp, elegant blazer and dark trousers, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders—intercepted the ball with a graceful sweep of her foot, sending it right back to Daniel’s feet.

Watching from the shaded veranda of the grand manor, Gabriel Moretti leaned against the stone railing, a cup of black coffee in his hand. The dark, hollow shadows that had haunted his eyes for years were gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakable peace.

Elena walked up the stone steps of the veranda, grabbing a towel to wipe the light sheen of sweat from her forehead. She stood beside Gabriel, looking out at the gardens.

"He’s gained four pounds," Elena noted with satisfaction. "Dr. Harrison said his heart murmur is practically undetectable now. All those swimming lessons are paying off."

"He’s safe," Gabriel said softly, turning his head to look at her. "And it’s because you didn't run away that night in Lenox Hill."

Elena turned her gaze to meet his. The professional distance between them had dissolved months ago, replaced by a deep, unspoken bond forged in blood, courage, and shared survival.

"I didn't run then, and I'm certainly not running now," Elena smiled softly.

Gabriel reached out, his hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against her cheek, warm and protective.

"Good," Gabriel whispered, leaning in close. "Because I never plan on letting you go."

Down on the lawn, Daniel cheered as he scored a goal against the empty net, shouting up toward the veranda. Gabriel and Elena both laughed, their hands intertwining naturally as they watched over the boy—not as a mob boss and his employee, but as a family, finally safe, whole, and home.
