Chapter 4 - The Ledger of SinsThe Astor Street safehouse was less of a hideout and more of an architectural fortress disguised as a historic limestone brownstone. Inside, however, it was a high-tech command center. Multiple monitors glowed against the exposed brick walls, displaying encrypted financial spreadsheets, real-time satellite feeds of Chicago harbor, and intercepted communications logs.

Nora sat at a massive mahogany desk, her fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard with dizzying speed. Sprawled across the desk were printed bank statements, corporate registry filings, and tax evasion summaries dating back five years.

Beside her, Julian stood pouring two cups of black coffee from a silver percolator. He placed one cup beside her keyboard without a word.

"Drink," he ordered. "You've been staring at those offshore accounts for six hours."

Nora took a sip, wincing slightly at the bitterness, but the caffeine hit her bloodstream like lightning. Her eyes burned with exhaustion, but her mind was hyper-focused.

"I found it," she whispered, pointing a slender finger at the central monitor.

Julian leaned over her shoulder, his broad chest brushing the back of her chair. "Talk to me."

"Viktor Vance isn't just skimming from the municipal transit grants," Nora explained, highlighting a complex web of transactions. "He’s using a front company called Kestrel Holdings to launder bribe money directly into the reelection campaign accounts of three key members of the city zoning committee. If those grants don't go through, his entire real estate syndicate in the industrial district goes bankrupt."

Julian’s eyes narrowed as he studied the corporate routing numbers. "And Claire found this file."

"She didn't just find it," Nora said, clicking open a secondary folder. "She cross-referenced it with the shipping manifests from Mercer Logistics. Vance’s front companies have been using your docks to smuggle counterfeit pharmaceuticals from Eastern Europe under the label of industrial machine parts."

Julian stood up straight, his face darkening into a mask of pure fury. "My own docks. He used my name as a shield."

"Which is why he tried to kill Claire," Nora concluded, leaning back in her leather chair and rubbing her tired eyes. "She wasn't just auditing a grant; she was uncovering a federal RICO case that would put Viktor and half the city council behind bars for the rest of their lives."

Marcus walked into the command center holding a heavily encrypted tablet. "Boss. We tracked Yuri Petrov. He’s celebrating his 'successful contract' at an underground poker club on Halsted Street. He thinks he’s untouchable."

Julian looked down at Nora. The silence in the room stretched for three heartbeats.

"Get your coat, Nora," Julian said quietly. "We're going to pay Mr. Petrov a visit."

"Me? Why do I need to come?" Nora asked, blinking in surprise.

"Because," Julian said, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth, "a good auditor always likes to collect her receipts in person."
