Chapter 6 - The Midnight HarborThe Lake Shore yacht club was a sprawling, multi-level architectural masterpiece jutting out into the black, churning waters of Lake Michigan. Frost coated the wooden docks, and the freezing wind off the water whipped through the rigging of docked luxury cruisers like the howling of wolves.

Inside the private glass-walled commodore’s lounge on the top floor, Viktor Vance sat at a mahogany table opposite two terrified city councilmen, two glasses of expensive scotch resting between them.

The heavy glass double doors didn't just open—they shattered inward in a shower of glittering shards.

Viktor leaped to his feet, his hand dropping toward his holster, but before his fingers could close around the grip, Julian Mercer was across the room, his fist connecting with Viktor’s jaw with the force of a wrecking ball.

Viktor crashed over the mahogany table, sending scotch glasses and zoning contracts flying in all directions.

The two city councilmen cowered against the wall, their faces pale with sheer panic.

"Julian! Have you lost your mind?!" Viktor roared, spitting blood onto the pristine carpet as he tried to push himself up. "You can't just barge in here—this is an official municipal meeting!"

Julian didn't give him a chance to stand. He planted a heavy leather shoe squarely on Viktor’s chest, pinning him to the floor.

Nora walked into the lounge behind Marcus, carrying her laptop and a portable satellite transmitter. She placed the equipment down on the edge of the surviving table, opened the screen, and connected it directly to the wall-mounted presentation monitor in the room.

In seconds, the glowing screen flashed with bright, undeniable financial evidence: bank routing numbers, shell company registries, wire transfers to the councilmen, and the toxicological lab report detailing the exact chemical agent used on Claire.

"Gentlemen," Nora said, turning to address the trembling city councilmen. "If you look at the top left of the screen, you'll see the exact paper trail linking Viktor Vance's bribes to your upcoming campaign accounts. And right beside it, the federal RICO indictment packet that is currently uploading to the U.S. Attorney's office on a delayed timer."

The councilmen stared at the screen, their expressions turning from fear to absolute, terminal dread.

"You're ruined, Viktor," Julian said coldly, pressing his boot down harder on Viktor's chest. "Your docks are seized. Your shell companies are frozen. And your enforcers are either in federal custody or fleeing the state. You tried to kill my sister. For that, I should throw you into the lake right now."

"You can't do this!" Viktor screamed, thrashing beneath Julian's boot. "The feds will come after you too—your shipping lines, your construction contracts—everything will burn!"

"Let it burn," Julian said softly. "Because unlike you, I have an empire built on loyalty, not fear. And I have people standing beside me who actually know how to keep it standing."

He looked back at Nora.

Nora met his gaze, the adrenaline slowly fading from her veins, replaced by a profound, strange sense of peace.
