Chapter 2 - The Fire on BroadwayThe storm had turned Boston's streets into rivers of black glass. Rain lashed against the windshield of Lucas's heavy SUV as it tore through the red lights along West Broadway, its engine roaring like an angry beast in the night.

In the passenger seat, Harold held a tactical tablet displaying the live thermal imaging feed transmitted by a surveillance drone Marcus had launched over the target building.

"Front entry is clear," Harold reported, his brow furrowed. "But we've got thermal signatures inside Apartment 4B. Three bodies. Moving erratically."

"Is Marcus on site?" Lucas asked, his hands gripped so tightly around the steering wheel that his knuckles turned white.

"He just pulled into the alley behind the bakery," Harold said. Then he froze, staring at the screen. "Wait. Flame ignition on the fourth floor. Boss! They're setting the building on fire!"

"Dammit!" Lucas slammed his foot onto the accelerator. The heavy SUV surged forward, sliding around the corner onto 14th Street just as a bright orange glow erupted from the upper windows of the four-story brick tenement building at 1428 West Broadway.

Plumes of thick, dark smoke billowed into the rainy sky, instantly swallowed by the gale-force winds. Sirens wailed in the distance, but they were too far away.

Lucas threw the vehicle into park right in front of the blazing building, springing out into the downpour before the engine had even turned off.

"Boss, wait for Marcus!" Harold shouted, scrambling out after him with his weapon drawn. "It's an ambush!"

Lucas didn't care. The image of Emma's terrified blue eyes flashed in his mind, followed by the memory of Claire nineteen years ago, wrapping a clean bandage around his bleeding abdomen in a dark train station closet. She had saved his life when he had nothing to offer her but a promise. He would not let her burn to death in a neglected apartment building while he waited for tactical support.

Lucas kicked the heavy wooden front door of the tenement open, bursting into the narrow, smoke-filled hallway. The air was hot and acrid, smelling of burning synthetic carpet and gasoline.

Coughes and screams echoed from the upper floors as panicked residents tried to navigate the stairwell. Lucas pushed past a frightened family fleeing downward, his hand firm on his weapon.

"Fourth floor!" Lucas barked to Harold, who was right at his heels. "Cover the rear!"

They bounded up the narrow stairs two at a time. By the time they reached the third-floor landing, the heat was intense enough to scorch the skin on their faces. Bright orange flames roared from beneath the door of Apartment 4B at the end of the hall.

Suddenly, the door of 4B burst open, and a heavy-set man in a leather jacket stumbled out, coughing violently while carrying a metal lockbox under his arm. On his neck, visible even through the soot, was a thick black tattoo of a coiled rattlesnake.

"Hold it!" Harold shouted.

The Viper gunman whirled around, raising a submachine gun.

Crack! Crack!

Lucas fired twice without hesitation. Both rounds struck the gunman in the chest. The man crashed back against the wall, dropping the metal lockbox with a heavy clatter before collapsing onto the burning floorboards.

Lucas didn't stop to inspect the body. He kicked open the burning door of Apartment 4B and plunged into the inferno.

"Claire!" he yelled, his voice cutting through the roar of the flames. "Claire!"

The living room was completely engulfed. Furniture was ablaze, and smoke hung like a heavy black curtain six inches from the floor.

Near the kitchen counter, a slender figure lay motionless on the linoleum.

Lucas dropped to his knees, crawling beneath the thick smoke. He reached the woman, grabbing her by her shoulders and rolling her onto her back.

Her face was pale and smeared with soot, her honey-brown hair matted with sweat. She had a severe bruise across her temple, and her hands were bound tightly behind her back with yellow zip-ties. But when Lucas pressed his fingers against her throat, he felt a faint, thumping pulse.

"I've got her!" Lucas roared to Harold.

He pulled a tactical knife from his belt, sliced through the plastic ties binding her wrists, and lifted Claire Carter into his arms. She weighed almost nothing—frail, exhausted, and battered by months of living on the run.

As Lucas stood up to carry her toward the door, a low, metallic groan echoed above them.

"Look out!" Harold screamed.

A burning ceiling beam snapped, collapsing downward in a shower of sparks and flaming debris. Lucas threw his body over Claire, shielding her with his back as a heavy timber crashed against his shoulder, tearing through his raincoat and scorching his suit jacket.

A sharp pain shot up his spine, but Lucas gritted his teeth, hoisted Claire higher against his chest, and charged through the flames into the hallway just as Marcus and his tactical team burst up the stairwell with fire extinguishers and medical kits.

"Clear the building!" Marcus ordered his men. "Get the boss out!"

They dragged Lucas and Claire down the emergency stairwell and out into the cool, pouring rain.

Lucas collapsed onto one knee on the wet pavement, gasping for fresh air, but he refused to let go of Claire. Paramedics from his private medical team rushed forward, laying her on a stretcher and placing an oxygen mask over her face.

Claire’s eyes fluttered open. She coughed weakly, her pale blue eyes searching the chaotic scene through a haze of smoke and pain.

Then her gaze locked onto Lucas.

She reached up with a trembling, soot-stained hand, her fingers brushing against the sharp angle of his jawline.

"Lucas..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring fire and distant sirens. "Emma... did she..."

"She's safe, Claire," Lucas said, taking her hand in his and holding it tight. "She's at my estate. She gave me the key."

Tears trickled through the soot on Claire's cheeks. A massive wave of relief washed over her face, and she closed her eyes, her breathing steadying under the oxygen mask.

"They... they know," she managed to gasp out before her strength gave way. "The man who killed your father... he's in your house, Lucas. He's been beside you... the whole time..."

Then her head fell back, and she went limp on the gurney.
