Chapter 5 - The Gathering of VipersBy 7:30 p.m. the following evening, a dense fog had rolled in off the Atlantic, wrapping the Blackwood Estate in a ghostly shroud.

The grand dining hall was set with pristine white tablecloths, crystal glassware, and sterling silver cutlery. Twelve high-backed leather chairs surrounded the massive mahogany table, reserved for the senior board members of the Blackwood enterprise.
Outside, the estate grounds were quiet, but beneath the surface, thirty elite tactical operators led by Marcus were hidden in the shadows, waiting for the signal.
Upstairs in the private master suite, Claire stood before a full-length mirror. She wore an elegant dark navy dress that Mrs. Gable had tailored for her, her hair styled neatly, the dark shadows beneath her eyes mostly concealed by light makeup. She still looked fragile, but her posture was straight, her blue eyes shining with a fierce, quiet dignity.
Emma sat on the edge of the plush bed, swinging her legs back and forth while playing with a small silver music box Lucas had given her from his private collection.
A soft knock sounded, and Lucas stepped into the room.
He was dressed in a tailored black three-piece suit, looking every bit the ruthless mob patriarch he was raised to be. But when his eyes met Claire’s in the mirror, his expression softened instantly.
"How are you feeling?" Lucas asked, walking over to stand beside her.
"Terrified," Claire admitted honestly, turning to face him. "What if Victor sees through the trap? What if he brings enough men to take the estate?"
Lucas reached out, taking both of her hands in his. His grip was warm, strong, and unwavering.
"Victor is arrogant, Claire," Lucas said gently. "Arrogant men are predictable. He believes Miller killed you. He believes the ledger is ash. He thinks I am a broken man terrified of another bomb. He is coming here to claim his prize."
Claire looked down at their joined hands. "Eleven years ago... I thought I was saving a stranger in that train station. I had no idea who you were, or what kind of world you lived in. If I had known..."
"If you had known, would you have left me there to die?" Lucas asked softly.
Claire raised her eyes, looking directly into his. "No. I would have saved you anyway."
A deep, quiet emotion stirred in Lucas’s chest. He raised her hand to his lips, placing a tender, gentle kiss against her knuckles.
"After tonight," Lucas promised, "you and Emma will never have to run again. You will have a real home. A real life. Free of fear."
"Come back to us down there," Claire whispered, her hand lingering against his cheek. "Don't let him turn you into a monster, Lucas."
"I have something to live for now," Lucas replied softly. "That makes me far harder to kill."
Downstairs, the heavy iron gates of the estate swung open.
A procession of three armored black Mercedes sedans glided up the long, winding driveway, their headlights cutting through the swirling fog.
From the lead car stepped Victor Vance.
At sixty-two, Victor was a striking man with silver hair, a manicured beard, and a posture that commanded respect. He wore a heavy wool coat over a expensive Italian suit, carrying a gold-topped walking cane. Beside him were four armed bodyguards, their hands resting near their jacket lapels.
As Victor stepped into the grand foyer of Blackwood Estate, Harold was waiting to greet him.
"Ah, Harold," Victor said, his voice smooth and melodious, like velvet masking steel. "A dreadful night outside. Is my dear nephew waiting for us?"
May you like
"Mr. Blackwood is in the dining hall, sir," Harold said politely, bowing his head slightly. "The rest of the board members have already arrived."
"Excellent," Victor smiled, tossing his coat to a servant. "It's time we finally settled the future of this family."
