Chapter 5 - THE SURGERY IN THE SHADOWSThe news of Matteo's disappearance sent shockwaves through the New York underworld, but inside the Moretti estate, a different kind of battle was about to begin. To regain his full vision, Aleandro needed the surgical micro-clip removed from the base of his optic nerve—a delicate, high-risk procedure that no standard hospital could perform without alerting the authorities.

Through his remaining loyal contacts, Aleandro brought Dr. Sarah Lin, a world-renowned neurosurgeon who had left academic medicine after exposing corruption in her own hospital system, to the estate. A private surgical suite was constructed in the east wing within forty-eight hours.
The night before the operation, Aleandro sat on the terrace overlooking Long Island Sound. The fog had cleared, and for the first time in five years, he could see the distant, twinkling golden lights of the New York skyline across the dark water. They were blurry, smudged like watercolors on canvas, but they were real.
Elena walked out onto the terrace carrying a tray of warm tea. She set it down quietly on the glass table, turning to leave.
"Stay a moment, Elena," Aleandro said, not turning his head.
She paused, wrapping her cardigan tight against the cool sea breeze. "Are you nervous about tomorrow, sir?"
"I haven't felt fear since the day my daughter died, Elena," Aleandro said softly. "Tomorrow is not about fear. It is about debt." He turned to look at her. In the faint moonlight, he could make out the sharp line of her jaw, the soft brown of her hair, and the gentle, fierce protectiveness in her posture.
"When Matteo took my eyes, he thought he took my life," Aleandro continued. "He turned this house into a mausoleum. My servants became ghosts. I became a ghost. And then your daughter walked into my drawing room with a plastic toy."
Elena smiled faintly, tears glittering in the corners of her eyes. "She didn't know any better, Mr. Moretti. She just saw a man sitting alone."
"She saved my life," Aleandro said firmly. "And so did you. You stayed in this room when you could have run. You read those reports to me when you knew what kind of man I was."
"I knew you were a man who had been wronged," Elena said simply. "And I know what it means to protect a child."
Aleandro reached out his hand. For the first time in five years, he reached for someone intentionally, without hesitation. His long fingers gently touched Elena's wrist. "If I open my eyes tomorrow and the world is clear," Aleandro said, his voice husky, "I don't want to look at an empty house. I want you and Mia to stay. Not as servants. Never as servants again."
Elena felt her heart skip a beat, a warm wave washing over the cold dread she had carried for years. "Aleandro... you don't owe us anything."
"It isn't a debt, Elena," he whispered. "It's a reason to wake up."
The following morning at six o'clock, Dr. Lin and her team performed the six-hour procedure under absolute secrecy. Elena waited outside the east wing doors, holding Mia in her lap, her fingers tangled in the child's soft curls as the hours ticked by.

At one in the afternoon, Dr. Lin stepped out of the room, pulling off her surgical mask. She looked exhausted, but a tired smile played on her lips. "The clip has been removed," Dr. Lin announced. "There was no permanent structural scarring on the nerve. The inflammation will take a few days to recede fully, but... he is going to see, Elena. Completely."
Elena let out a long, ragged breath she felt she had been holding for two years, tears spilling freely down her cheeks as she pulled Mia close to her chest.
