Chapter 6 - THE LIGHT ON THE SOUNDThree weeks later, the late summer heat had given way to the crisp, clear air of early autumn. The heavy black velvet curtains that had covered the windows of the Moretti estate for five years were gone, replaced by light, floating linen that let the afternoon sunshine flood every corridor.

In the grand drawing room, the oak furniture had been rearranged. The quiet, suffocating atmosphere of a tomb was entirely eradicated, replaced by the warm, living sounds of a real home.

Aleandro stood by the tall glass doors leading out to the garden. He wore a crisp gray suit, his dark glasses tucked permanently into his breast pocket. His steel-grey eyes were clear, sharp, and full of life, tracking the movement of the autumn leaves as they danced across the lawn.

The heavy front door opened, and Elena walked into the room wearing a simple, elegant navy dress. She carried a basket of fresh flowers from the greenhouse. Behind her, small footsteps scampered across the polished hardwood floor—not the cautious, whispered steps of the past, but the loud, joyous running of a child who owned the space.

"Uncle Aleandro! Look!" Mia shouted, holding up a bright red leaf she had found in the courtyard.

Aleandro turned around. A genuine, radiant smile broke across his face—a sight no one in the Moretti syndicate had seen in nearly a decade. He dropped down to one knee, holding out his arms. Mia ran straight into them, her small arms wrapping around his neck as he lifted her high into the air, her laughter echoing off the high plaster ceilings.

"That is a very fine leaf, Mia," Aleandro said, setting her back down gently and looking up at Elena.

Elena walked over, setting the flower basket on the side table. "The lawyers called from Manhattan. The restructuring of the shipping company is complete. The criminal ties have been completely severed, Aleandro. You're out. Legally and permanently."

"It was time," Aleandro said, taking Elena's hand in his. He brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently as she blushed. "The empire belonged to a man who lived in the dark. I have no interest in going back there."

He looked around the bright, sun-drenched room—at the flowers, at the open doors leading to the sea, at the woman standing beside him, and at the little girl now happily chasing a new blue ball across the rug.

For five years, he had lived in a prison built by betrayal, counting steps in the dark, waiting for an end that never came. But a tiny beam of yellow light had shattered the darkness, revealing not just the traitors in his shadows, but the possibility of a brand-new life.

Aleandro pulled Elena close to his side, looking out at the shimmering blue water of the Long Island Sound as the sun began its slow, beautiful descent toward the horizon. The darkness was finally over.
