Chapter 5 - The Transmutation of WorthTwo months later.

The spring sun warmed the stone terraces of the Rossi estate in Westchester. The frozen rose garden where Carmela had once wandered in confusion was now in full, vibrant bloom, filled with red, white, and pink roses.

Skyler stood near the stone fountain, holding a leather sketchbook and a set of charcoal pencils.

She was wearing a tailored lavender dress that fitted her soft, full figure comfortably, her dark hair pinned back elegantly, showing the small, faint silver line running along her left cheek—a scar that Dr. Vance had carefully minimized, but one that Skyler no longer tried to hide.

Over the past eight weeks, her life had transformed completely.

She no longer wore a white cleaning apron. She no longer apologized for taking up space. Under the care of private physical therapists and tutors hired by Dominic, Skyler had begun studying art history and landscape design—a passion she had abandoned years ago to pay off her family’s medical debts.

More importantly, Carmela Rossi’s memory care had been revolutionized. With dedicated specialists and a safe, peaceful environment, the old matriarch’s confusion had stabilized, allowing her to spend her days painting in the gardens alongside Skyler.

Footsteps echoed against the stone terrace.

Skyler turned to see Dominic walking toward her. He had dropped his dark trench coat, wearing a simple white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms, carrying two porcelain cups of coffee.

He set one cup on the stone table beside her sketchbook, looking down at the detailed drawing she had been working on—a sweeping redesign of the estate’s grand conservatory.

“It’s beautiful, Skyler,” Dominic said softly, stepping close behind her. The subtle scent of cedar and expensive cologne radiated from him, making Skyler’s pulse quicken.

“Thank you,” Skyler smiled, looking up into his clear blue eyes. “I wanted to replace the old wrought-iron tables with something warmer. Wood and brass.”

“Consider it approved,” Dominic said without hesitation. “The contractors can begin on Monday.”

Skyler laughed softly—a sweet, genuine sound that Dominic had come to treasure above all else in his dark, violent world.

“Dominic, you can’t just approve every design I make without checking the budget,” she teased gently.

“I own the company, Skyler,” Dominic replied, a rare, genuine smile illuminating his handsome face. “I can approve whatever I want. Especially when it’s made by the woman who restored life to this house.”

He reached out, his warm hand gently resting on her waist—a soft, natural touch that carried no demand, only profound affection.

Skyler didn't pull away. She didn't shrink or try to apologize for her size. She stood tall beside him, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of the man who had fought a war to keep her safe.

“How is the scar feeling today?” Dominic asked softly, his thumb gently tracing the faint silver line on her cheek.

“It doesn't hurt anymore,” Skyler whispered, looking into his eyes. “It reminds me that I’m stronger than I thought I was.”

“It reminds me of the day I almost lost the most precious thing that ever entered my life,” Dominic murmured, his voice dropping into a low, intense whisper that sent a thrill through her soul.

Before Skyler could answer, Marco stepped onto the terrace, carrying a leather briefcase. He looked at Dominic, then gave a respectful bow toward Skyler.

“Boss,” Marco reported. “The legal transfers for the Moretti harbor properties have been finalized. The board is waiting for your signature on the new port charter.”

Dominic nodded, taking the pen Marco held out. He signed the heavy parchment documents quickly, then looked up at his chief of security.

“Make sure the new charter includes the name change we discussed,” Dominic instructed.

Marco smiled warmly. “It’s already done, Boss. Pier Forty-Two has been officially renamed The Gallagher Terminal.”

Skyler gasped, her hand going to her mouth in utter shock. “Dominic! You named a shipping terminal after me?!”

May you like

Dominic turned back to her, taking both of her hands into his, his gray-blue eyes burning with an absolute, unwavering devotion.

“I named it after the woman who protected this family when everyone else failed,” Dominic said softly. “It’s a reminder to this entire city of who truly holds the power in New York.”
