Chapter 3 - The Trap is Set

Three days later, the news cycle in Chicago was completely dominated by the high-profile arrest of Serena Montague. Front-page headlines displayed her sobbing in handcuffs as she was led out of the Blackwood estate by federal agents. The Montague empire had collapsed like a house of cards, its assets frozen and its stocks worthless.
But deep within the underground networks of the Midwest, a different rumor was deliberately planted by Marcus and Victor’s intelligence officers.
A whisper went out through the criminal channels: The Blackwood family nanny, a woman named Eleanor Vance, has been named as the primary witness in a multi-million-dollar federal lawsuit against the Montague estate. She is currently residing at the Blackwood private coastal villa in Michigan, holding evidence that could destroy local syndicate networks.
In a rundown, grease-stained motel on the outskirts of Gary, Indiana, Derek Vance sat on the edge of a stained mattress, staring at a burner phone screen.
His yellowed teeth bared in a feral grin as he looked at the photo of Eleanor—Lily—stepping out of the hospital alongside Victor Blackwood.
"Found you, little bird," Derek growled into the dark room, racking the slide of a heavy 9mm pistol. "Thought you could hide under a billionaire's coat? I'm gonna tear your wings off."
Meanwhile, at the Blackwood private estate in Lake Forest, thirty miles north of Chicago, the atmosphere was quiet, serene, and intensely guarded.
The estate sat on a cliff overlooking Lake Michigan, surrounded by ten-foot stone walls, thermal motion sensors, and twenty armed guards dressed in civilian clothing.
Ethan was thriving. With his cast on, he had learned to navigate the thick Persian rugs using his right arm and knees, happily dragging a plush velvet bear behind him.
Lily sat on the sun porch, watching Ethan play with a wooden block set. The bruises on her face had faded to a light yellow, and for the first time in two years, she was eating three full meals a day.
Victor walked onto the porch, carrying a glass of sparkling water for her and an apple juice box for Ethan. He had shed his formal three-piece suit for a casual black cashmere sweater and dark trousers, making him look less like an untouchable mob patriarch and more like a handsome, protective father.
"He’s getting faster," Victor noted, sitting beside Lily on the wicker bench, watching Ethan construct a wooden tower.
"He’s resilient," Lily smiled, taking the glass from him. "Children heal quickly when they feel safe."
"And you?" Victor asked softly, his gaze settling on her profile. "Do you feel safe here, Lily?"
Lily looked out at the vast, blue expanse of Lake Michigan stretching out toward the horizon. "I haven't felt safe since I was nineteen years old, Victor. But here... with you and Ethan... for the first time in my life, I don't look over my shoulder when I walk through a doorway."
Victor reached over, taking her hand gently. His calloused thumb traced the soft back of her knuckles. "You will never have to look over your shoulder again. My legal team filed formal paperwork yesterday. Your identity as Lily Parker has been granted full legal legitimacy under the Federal Witness Protection Program. Eleanor Vance is officially declared deceased."
Lily felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time it was a tear of immense, overwhelming gratitude. "You did that for me?"
"I do not leave my debts unpaid," Victor said quietly. "And I owe you the life of my child."
"It wasn't a debt," Lily whispered, looking into his deep gray eyes. "I love him, Victor. I loved him from the moment I held him."
Victor stepped closer, his hand moving up to cup her cheek gently. His thumb wiped away the lone tear. "And he loves you. And I..."
Before Victor could finish his sentence, the heavy brass radio on his belt crackled to life with sharp static.
"Boss," Marcus’s voice cut through the air, tense and sharp. "Thermal sensors at the north gate just picked up an breach. A single vehicle smashed through the secondary fence. Two armed men are on the lawn."

Victor didn't panic. His expression transformed instantly back into the cold, terrifying mask of the Blackwood patriarch.
"Keep Ethan on the floor in the panic room," Victor commanded softly, standing up and pulling a dark steel revolver from a hidden holster beneath his sweater. "Marcus, seal the perimeter. Do not shoot to kill yet. I want Derek Vance alive."
