Chapter 4 - Blood and RainThe discovery of the mole inside the Rossi logistics network triggered a wave of paranoia across the city's criminal hierarchy. Rival families, sensing that Gabriel was cleaning house, began posturing along the borders of his territory.

Three weeks after the incident in the office, Gabriel’s personal motorcade was forced to travel to an abandoned industrial warehouse near the riverfront. It was a neutral site chosen for a high-stakes truce meeting with Don Salieri—the elderly, ruthless leader of the city’s northern syndicate, who was suspected of financing the betrayals within Gabriel’s ranks.
Rain poured from the black night sky in heavy, relentless sheets. The riverfront smelled of salt, rusted iron, and decay.
Chloe sat in the rear leather seat of a new, heavily armored black sedan, sitting directly beside Gabriel. On his other side sat Levi, his towering, scar-faced chief of tactical security.
Chloe wore a dark wool coat over her tailored suit. Over the past month, her relationship with Gabriel had evolved into something deep, intense, and quietly intimate. They spent long hours together in his study late at night, reviewing intelligence reports, talking about her family, and sharing meals. He had paid off her father’s lingering medical debts and secured top-tier specialist care for her sister’s asthma. In return, she had become his most trusted advisor—the only person in his vast empire who spoke to him with absolute, unvarnished honesty.
"Salieri brought eight men," Levi reported from the front seat, checking a tactical tablet connected to their drone feed outside. "All heavily armed. They’re positioned inside the main bay."
Gabriel checked the magazine of his sidearm, sliding it back into his shoulder holster. "Salieri is old, but he’s desperate. His territory is drying up. Keep your eyes open, Levi."
He turned his head to look at Chloe. In the dim, ambient light of the sedan's dashboard, his dark eyes softened completely.
"Stay inside the vehicle with the driver," Gabriel told her softly, reaching over to cover her hand with his broad, warm palm. "The glass is rated for heavy rifle fire. You’ll be safe here."
Chloe squeezed his hand, her brow furrowing with concern. "Don't let him push you toward the rear loading docks, Gabriel. The drone feed showed two dark vans parked outside the eastern gates. If things go wrong, that's where an ambush will come from."
Gabriel offered her a rare, gentle smile, leaning over to press a brief, warm kiss against her forehead. "I hear you, little hawk. I’ll be back in ten minutes."
He stepped out of the vehicle, accompanied by Levi and four heavily armed Rossi soldiers. The heavy reinforced door clicked shut, leaving Chloe inside the quiet, leather-scented cabin with the tactical driver.
Through the rain-streaked, dark-tinted glass, Chloe watched Gabriel’s tall, imposing figure walk into the cavernous, dimly lit warehouse.
Five minutes passed in tense silence.
Chloe watched the perimeter. Her gaze drifted toward the high, rusted catwalks extending along the exterior of the warehouse roof.
Through the blinding curtain of rain, she caught a brief, metallic glint near an overhead exhaust vent—a tiny flash of light reflecting off a high-powered rifle scope.
"Driver," Chloe said instantly, her voice sharp as glass. "Catwalk. Three o'clock. Sniper."
The driver leaned forward, squinting through the windshield. "I don't see anything, Miss Mercer—"
Before he could finish his sentence, a deafening explosion shattered the quiet of the night.
BOOM!
A heavy breaching charge detonated against the side wall of the warehouse, throwing a wall of dust, concrete, and fire into the air. Instantly, the sound of heavy automatic gunfire erupted from inside the building, echoing wildly across the riverbank.
"Gabriel!" Chloe gasped.
She didn't hesitate. Ignoring the driver’s frantic shouts, Chloe grabbed a small, heavy tactical flashlight from the center console, threw open the heavy sedan door, and sprinted directly into the pouring rain toward the warehouse entrance.
"Miss Mercer! Get back here!" the driver screamed, drawing his weapon to follow her.
Chloe burst through the side service door of the warehouse. The air inside was thick with acrid grey smoke, plaster dust, and the deafening roar of automatic weapons.
Through the haze, she saw Gabriel and Levi taking cover behind a stack of heavy wooden cargo crates. Salieri’s men were sweeping in from the eastern loading docks—just as Chloe had predicted—firing heavy submachine guns to trap the Rossi team in a crossfire.
Gabriel was firing back with lethal precision, but a sniper on the high upper catwalk was pinning them down, dropping heavy rifle rounds that splintered the wooden crates inches from Gabriel’s head.
"Gabriel!" Chloe yelled, staying low behind a concrete pillar.
Gabriel spun his head, his face turning pale with absolute terror when he saw her in the middle of the firefight. "Chloe! Get the hell out of here!"
"The sniper is on the northern catwalk!" she screamed over the roar of gunfire, pointing her heavy tactical flashlight upward. "Directly above the crane housing!"
Gabriel didn't question her for a single second. He adjusted his position, aimed his heavy handgun upward into the dark rafters above the crane housing, and fired three rapid shots into the shadows.
A muffled cry echoed from the ceiling as a sniper in full black gear tumbled off the high catwalk, crashing through a wooden crate forty feet below.
With the sniper eliminated, Levi raised his tactical shotgun and led a fierce counter-charge, driving Salieri's remaining gunmen back toward the river exit.
In the sudden lull of the gunfire, Gabriel sprinted across the dust-filled floor, grabbing Chloe by the waist and pulling her tightly against his chest behind the concrete pillar. He was breathing heavily, his suit covered in plaster dust and rain, his eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of rage and love.
"Are you insane?" he roared softly, his hands trembling as he checked her body for injuries. "I told you to stay in the car! You could have been killed!"
Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against his damp collar, her body shaking from the shock of the adrenaline. "I told you... I don't leave you behind."
Gabriel froze. He pressed his face into the side of her neck, inhaling her scent amid the smell of gunpowder and blood. He held her so tightly she could barely breathe, his heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"If I had lost you tonight," Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking with raw, unvarnished emotion, "I would have burned this entire city to ash."
He pulled back, his large hands framing her rain-slicked face, and brought his lips down onto hers in a fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, copper, and profound relief.
