Chapter 3 - The Conspiracy in Tepotzlan

The realization that Isabel had not abandoned him, but had been stolen, drugged, and imprisoned in a secluded facility for nearly a decade, transformed Rodrigo from a broken man into a lethal force of nature.

For seven years, Mauricio had used Rodrigo’s blindness to forge his signature on corporate transfers, siphon millions of dollars into offshore shell accounts, and pay the heavy bribes required to keep Isabel hidden in the mountains of Tepotzlan under a false medical commitment.

That night, while the mansion slept, Rodrigo sat in his study with Marisol and Julián.

“We cannot call the local police,” Rodrigo said, his voice cold, analytical, and sharp as a scalpel. “Mauricio has bought off local officials for years. If he receives a whisper that we know about Santa María, he will have Isabel moved or worse—silenced permanently.”

“What are we going to do, sir?” Marisol asked, her heart racing.

“We need someone outside this house whom Mauricio does not control,” Rodrigo said. He turned his head toward Marisol. “Marisol, in my desk’s bottom drawer, behind the mahogany lining, there is an old leather address book. Look for the name Andrés Sterling.”

Marisol reached into the secret compartment, pulled out the small book, and flipped through the yellowed pages. “I found it! Andrés Sterling... it has a personal mobile number and a private law office address in Querétaro.”

“Andrés was my closest friend before the accident,” Rodrigo explained, a glimmer of hope touching his voice. “Mauricio convinced me years ago that Andrés had betrayed me during the corporate restructuring. Now I know it was another lie to isolate me. Use your personal cell phone, Marisol. Call him now.”

Marisol dialed the number. The phone rang four times before a deep, authoritative voice answered:

“Sterling Law Firm.”

“Licenciado Sterling?” Marisol said, her voice shaking slightly. “My name is Marisol. I am calling from the Santillán estate in Lomas de Chapultepec on behalf of Don Rodrigo Santillán.”

There was a sudden gasp on the other end of the line. “Rodrigo? Good God... I was told by Mauricio six years ago that Rodrigo suffered severe brain damage and refused to speak to anyone from his past!”

“It was a lie, Andrés!” Rodrigo shouted toward the phone, tears springing to his eyes. “It was all a lie! Mauricio locked me in my own house, stole my fortune, and he has Isabel hidden in a sanatorium in Tepotzlan!”

A heavy silence fell over the line, followed by the sharp sound of Andrés slamming his fist against a wooden desk. “That bastard... Rodrigo, listen to me. I have been quietly investigating suspicious property transfers under your company’s name for two years, but I couldn't get near you because of Mauricio’s private security guards! Where is Isabel?”

“Sanatorium Santa María,” Marisol read from the paper. “Under the name Isabel Gomez.”

“I know that place,” Andrés said grimly. “It’s a corrupt, high-security private facility notorious for handling 'inconvenient' family members for wealthy elites. I am calling federal prosecutors and the State Special Operations Unit immediately. Rodrigo, you must act completely normal until we strike. Do not let Mauricio suspect a single thing!”

“Hurry, Andrés,” Rodrigo whispered. “Please... bring my wife home.”

Over the next forty-eight hours, the atmosphere inside the mansion became suffocatingly tense.

Rodrigo played the part of the blind, hopeless invalid with masterclass perfection. He sat in his usual chair, ate his solitary meals, and let Mauricio read him fake financial updates.

However, Mauricio was not stupid. He noticed small changes: the way Marisol no longer cowered when he entered the room; the way Valentina looked at him with fearless disdain; and the subtle, sharp alertness in Rodrigo’s posture whenever footsteps approached.

On Thursday afternoon, Mauricio entered the security monitoring room in the basement. He opened the private audio log files linked to hidden micro-microphones he had installed in the sunroom years ago.

He clicked on the recording from Tuesday afternoon.

Through the speakers, Marisol’s clear voice echoed: “'Patient Isabel Gomez de Santillán... Sanatorium Santa María in Tepotzlan...'”

Followed by Rodrigo’s heartbroken sob: “She’s alive... my Isabel...”

Mauricio’s face went dead white. A cold, murderous rage flooded his veins.

“They know,” Mauricio whispered, his voice trembling with venom. “The maid... the damn maid and her brat found the box.”

Mauricio turned off the system, pulled a heavy 9mm pistol from his desk safe, and shoved it into his suit holster. He pulled out his phone and dialed the director of Sanatorium Santa María.

“Prepare Patient Isabel for immediate transfer,” Mauricio ordered ruthlessly. “Accident on the road. High dosage. Make sure she doesn't survive the night.”
