Chapter 6 - A Table Set for Four

Six months later.

The morning sun over Lomas de Chapultepec was brilliant and warm, shining through the spotless windows of the Santillán mansion. The old, gloomy velvet drapes had been replaced with light, sheer white linen that blew gently in the spring breeze.

The gardens were in full bloom, filled with white roses, lavender, and vibrant yellow sunflowers.

In the grand dining room, the long mahogany table was no longer dark or abandoned.

At the head of the table sat Don Rodrigo. His health had returned completely, his posture commanding and full of vigor. Though his sight could not be fully restored, advanced corrective procedures had allowed him to perceive light, shadows, and vague silhouettes—enough to see the bright, beautiful world around him.

To his right sat Doña Isabel, looking radiant, her health fully recovered, her smile lighting up the entire room. She had taken over management of a charitable foundation dedicated to protecting vulnerable women and children.

To his left sat Marisol, dressed elegantly in a sharp blazer. She was no longer a maid; Rodrigo had appointed her as the Executive Director of Estate Administration and Trustee of the Santillán Educational Trust, while financing her university degree in business administration.

And sitting right across from Rodrigo, swinging her legs under her custom-made high chair, was Valentina. She wore a bright yellow dress with a big, neat bow in her hair, happily dipping a toasted concha into a cup of warm chocolate.

“Look, Don Rodrigo!” Valentina giggled, pointing her cookie toward the window. “The sun is making a big yellow circle on your plate!”

Rodrigo turned his face toward the warmth, smiling warmly as he reached across the table to pat her small hand. “I can feel it, Vale. It’s very bright.”

Julián walked in, carrying a fresh tray of tropical fruit and warm pastries, laughing as Valentina tried to sneak a second sweet bread off the tray.

“Now, little lady,” Julián teased playfully, “don't spoil your appetite before school!”

“I need my energy for drawing!” Valentina declared proudly. “Today I’m going to draw a picture of Don Rodrigo with giant superhero eyes!”

Everyone at the table laughed—a rich, harmonious sound that echoed through the vast, sunlit halls of the mansion.

After breakfast, Rodrigo and Isabel walked out onto the sunlit terrace, holding hands, listening to the birds singing in the gardens below. Marisol and Valentina joined them, watching the colorful butterflies flutter over the lavender bushes.

Rodrigo wrapped one arm around his wife’s waist and rested his other hand on Marisol’s shoulder, while Valentina hugged his knee.

He looked up at the sky, feeling the deep, unshakeable peace that had filled his heart.

Seven years ago, he had believed his life was over—that he was destined to die alone in the dark, surrounded by empty chairs and bitter memories. But a innocent three-year-old girl with cajeta on her dress had walked into his darkness, asked a simple question, and shattered a terrible lie.

The darkness was gone. The empty chair was filled. And the table was forever set with love, truth, and family.
