Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF THE EAST LODGEMidnight had descended over Hawthorne Ridge, bringing with it a thick, rolling fog that swallowed the estate’s halogen security lights in a milky haze.

Inside the east guest lodge, everything was quiet.
Emma was fast asleep in her small wooden bed upstairs, clutching her teddy bear tightly against her chest. Downstairs, Sophia sat at the wooden desk, reviewing inventory lists for the library by the soft, warm glow of a desk lamp.
Bruno lay stretched out across the threshold of the front door, his massive black head resting on his front paws, fast asleep.
Suddenly, Bruno’s ears twitched.
His eyes snapped open. He didn't growl—not yet. But his entire body went rigid as iron. The heavy hair along his spine lifted.
Sophia looked up from her desk, sensing the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere. "Bruno? What is it, boy?"
A faint, muffled sound echoed from the outer garden gate.
Click.
The distinct sound of wire cutters snapping through heavy chain-link fencing.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. She stood up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. "Bruno..."
Before she could take a step toward the stairs to reach Emma, the front windows of the lodge shattered inward in a deafening explosion of flying glass and splintered wood.
"FLASHBANG! GO, GO, GO!"
A blinding white light flooded the living room accompanied by a concussive blast that rattled the windows and sent Sophia screaming backward, tumbling over the desk as she shielded her face with her arms.
Three armed mercenaries, dressed head-to-toe in black tactical gear and wearing night-vision goggles, swarmed through the broken window frame, their submachine guns raised.
They expected a terrified, defenseless woman.
They didn't expect Bruno.
With a terrifying, guttural roar that sounded less like a dog and more like a cornered wild beast, the one-hundred-and-forty-pound Cane Corso launched himself through the air.
He hit the first mercenary squarely in the chest, the sheer kinetic force throwing the six-foot-two man backward through the shattered doorframe onto the stone porch with a sickening crunch of breaking bone.
"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT DOG—!" the second mercenary screamed, raising his weapon to fire.
Bruno whipped around with blinding speed, his jaws clamping down onto the man's tactical forearm protector, shaking him like a ragdoll until the submachine gun slipped from his gloved hands and clattered across the floor.
The third mercenary panicked, aiming his rifle directly at the dog's head.
BANG! BANG!
Two silenced shots echoed through the room. One bullet grazed Bruno’s shoulder, tearing through his black fur and drawing a dark streak of blood.
Bruno let out a sharp yelp of pain, but instead of retreating, he lunged again, tackling the third mercenary to the floor just as the man pulled the trigger a third time.
"MOMMY!"
Emma’s terrified scream rang out from the top of the stairs.
"EMMA, STAY UPSTAIRS! DON'T MOVE!" Sophia screamed, scrambling frantically across the floor toward the kitchen to find anything she could use to defend her daughter.
The mercenary pinned beneath Bruno managed to draw a combat knife from his tactical vest, raising it to strike a fatal blow down into the dog's neck.
"NO!" Sophia shrieked, grabbing a heavy cast-iron skillet from the kitchen rack and rushing forward with reckless, desperate fury.
Before she could reach them, the front door was kicked off its iron hinges with a thunderous CRACK.
Alessandro Moretti stood in the shattered doorway.
He wasn't wearing his overcoat. His sleeves were rolled up, his face carved from pure, unadulterated rage, and his Beretta was raised and firing with lethal, robotic precision.
BANG! BANG!
Two clean, perfectly placed rounds caught the mercenary holding the knife square in the chest. The man went limp instantly, collapsing onto the rug beneath Bruno.
The entire room fell dead silent, save for the crackling of the fireplace and Bruno’s heavy, ragged panting.
Marco Bellini and four armed security guards flooded into the lodge behind Alessandro, securing the perimeter in seconds.
"Clear!" Marco barked, kicking a weapon away from the fallen intruder.
Alessandro dropped his pistol back into its holster, his chest heaving as he scanned the blood-spattered living room. His dark eyes locked onto Sophia, who was shaking violently, clutching the cast-iron skillet to her chest like a shield.
"Sophia," Alessandro breathed, rushing across the room. He grabbed her by the shoulders, his hands trembling slightly—the only sign of the terrifying panic he had just fought through. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"
"I'm... I'm okay," Sophia sobbed, tears finally breaking free and streaming down her pale cheeks. "I'm okay, but Emma... Emma is upstairs!"
Without waiting, Alessandro sprinted up the wooden staircase, two steps at a time.
When he reached the landing, Emma was standing outside her bedroom door, clutching her teddy bear so hard her knuckles were white, her eyes wide with terror.
Alessandro dropped to one knee, gently pulling the trembling child into his arms and burying her face against his shoulder.
"I've got you, little one," Alessandro murmured, his baritone voice thick with raw emotion. "You're safe. No one will ever touch you. I swear it on my life."
Downstairs in the living room, Sophia dropped the skillet and fell to her knees beside Bruno.

The massive dog was lying on his side, bleeding from a graze on his shoulder, his heavy breathing coming in shallow gasps.
"Oh, Bruno... good boy, good boy," Sophia wept, pressing her hands against his thick black fur, realizing with staggering clarity that this injured, ferocious animal had just saved her daughter’s life at the cost of his own blood.
