Chapter 5 - THE MARCH ON MOTOR ROWDawn broke over Chicago, but there was no warmth in the pale gray light that filtered through the skyline.

Inside the underground tactical command center beneath the Hawthorne Ridge garage, the atmosphere was thick with cold, methodical fury. The room hummed with the glow of multiple computer monitors displaying satellite feeds, encrypted phone intercepts, and security blueprints of downtown Chicago.

Alessandro Moretti stood at the head of a long steel table. He had changed into a fresh black suit, his tie neatly knotted, his face a mask of absolute, terrifying resolve.

Around the table sat Marco Bellini and six senior captains of the Moretti syndicate—men who controlled the ports, the financial districts, and the transit hubs of the Midwest.

"Sterling thinks he can reach inside my home," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as it echoed off the concrete walls. "He thinks sending a hit squad to a guest lodge makes him a player."

"Boss," Marco said, leaning forward over the blueprints of an abandoned commercial warehouse on Motor Row—Victor Sterling’s primary downtown base of operations. "The federal authorities are watching the docks because of the warehouse fire. If we hit Sterling openly in the city, the task force will be all over us within ten minutes."

"I am not asking the police for permission," Alessandro replied flatly. "Sterling crossed a line that no amount of money or territory can erase. He threatened a child. He shed blood on my land."

He placed both palms flat on the steel table, leaning forward until his eyes locked onto every captain in the room.

"Tonight, at midnight, we dismantle Victor Sterling’s entire operation. Every warehouse, every financial account, every shell corporation, and every man loyal to him. We leave nothing."

The captains exchanged grim, determined glances. For years, Alessandro had maintained a policy of calculated restraint, avoiding open turf wars that drew federal heat. But seeing the boss—cold, merciless, and driven by a personal vengeance unlike anything they had ever witnessed—they knew there was no turning back.

"And Sterling himself?" one captain asked quietly.

"Sterling is mine," Alessandro said.

Meanwhile, three hundred yards away in the east guest lodge, a very different kind of battle was taking place.

Bruno was lying on a plush mattress that Dr. Hale had hastily delivered, resting his head on his paws while Emma carefully applied a pink bandage to his bandaged shoulder.

"See?" Emma told him seriously, stroking his ears. "You’re a brave doctor's assistant. You get extra cookies."

Sophia sat nearby on the sofa, watching the scene with a cup of untouched chamomile tea in her hands. Her heart was still heavy with the memory of the previous night’s gunfire, but looking at Emma and the dog, a profound sense of awe washed over her.

The door opened softly, and Alessandro stepped inside.

He had just finished the briefing with his captains. He looked tired, the hard lines around his eyes revealing the immense weight of the war he was about to unleash.

Emma looked up. "Mr. Moretti! Bruno is being very brave."

Alessandro walked over, kneeling beside the dog. He reached out and gently scratched Bruno behind the ears. The dog gave a soft, appreciative huff.

Then Alessandro looked up at Sophia.

"Sophia," he said softly, standing up and walking toward her. "Pack a bag."

Sophia froze, her tea cup rattling against the saucer. "Pack a bag? Why? Are we... are we being sent away?"

"No," Alessandro said, stopping just inches from her. His gray eyes were intense, stripped of all armor, revealing a vulnerability he had never shown another human being since the day he lost his own family decades ago. "You are not leaving. But tonight, I am going to finish this. And while I am gone, I am moving you and Emma to the one place in this city where no one—not Sterling, not the devil himself—can ever reach you."

Sophia looked up into his eyes, seeing the storm raging beneath the surface, but also seeing an unwavering promise of protection.

"Where?" she whispered.

"My mother’s old home," Alessandro said quietly. "Deep in the North Woods, guarded by my most trusted men. I will join you there the moment it's over."

Sophia’s breath hitched. She reached out, her fingers gently touching the lapel of his black suit jacket. "Be careful, Alessandro."

It was the first time she had used his given name without a title attached.

Alessandro’s hand covered hers, his long fingers intertwining with hers with a fierce, unbreakable grip.

"I always come back," he promised.
