Chapter 4 - THE STORM BREAKSNight fell over the Oregon coast with terrifying speed, bringing with it a violent storm that lashed the cliffs with howling winds and sheets of torrential rain. Inside the manor, however, the atmosphere was agonizingly still.

Claire sat in a plush armchair in the east wing suite, rocking Henry until he finally fell asleep against her chest. The little boy’s breathing was soft and even, entirely oblivious to the dark web of violence surrounding them.
The door opened silently, and Vincent stepped into the room. He had changed into a dark tactical sweater, and his hands were wrapped in athletic tape across the knuckles. He looked every bit the underground warlord his enemies feared.
"He's asleep," Claire whispered, not looking up.
"Good," Vincent murmured, walking over to check the window locks before turning back to her. "The courier arrived from the lab ten minutes ago."
Claire’s breath hitched. She gently laid Henry down in the ornate crib Mrs. Gable had set up, smoothing a light blanket over his chest. Then she turned to face Vincent, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.
"The results?" she asked.
Vincent reached into his pocket and pulled out a sealed manila envelope. He didn't open it immediately. He held it out toward her.
"99.98% probability," Vincent said quietly. "He is my son."
Even though she had known in her bones since the moment Vincent looked at Henry in the coffee shop, hearing the official confirmation felt like a physical blow. Claire closed her eyes for a second, letting the reality wash over her.
"What happens now?" she asked, opening her eyes. "Does this mean a custody battle? Lawyers? Judges?"
"There will be no lawyers," Vincent said firmly, tossing the envelope onto the bedside table. "And there will be no court battles. Henry stays with you, always. But my name goes on the birth certificate, and my protection covers every second of his life."
"And your enemies?" Claire challenged, stepping closer. "What happens when the Rossi syndicate decides to come after him to get to you?"
"They won't get the chance," Vincent replied, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying certainty. "As of two hours ago, every major asset belonging to the Rossi family in this state has been seized or liquidated by my holdings. Their leadership is currently fleeing the country. They are no longer a threat."
Claire stared at him in disbelief. "You dismantled an entire syndicate in two hours?"
"When someone threatens my family, I don't negotiate," Vincent said simply. "I eradicate the threat."
Before Claire could process the sheer scale of his power, a sudden, piercing alarm echoed through the manor.
It wasn't a standard smoke alarm. It was a low, pulsing klaxon—the perimeter breach alert.
Vincent’s entire body went rigid. In a fraction of a second, he drew a suppressed automatic pistol from a concealed holster beneath his sweater, flicking off the safety with a sharp click.
"Stay in this room," Vincent ordered, his voice brooking no argument. "Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice giving the specific passphrase: Veritas."
"Vincent, what's happening?" Claire panicked, rushing toward him.
"The Rossi family didn't send a warning car today," Vincent said grimly, his dark eyes burning with fierce intensity. "They sent a suicide squad. Stay with our son."
He turned and bolted out the door, slamming it shut behind him. The heavy click of the electronic lock engaging echoed like a death knell in the quiet room.

Claire’s hands shook as she locked the secondary deadbolt. She rushed over to the crib, scooping a startled, crying Henry into her arms, pressing him tightly against her chest as the muffled sound of gunfire echoed from the lower levels of the manor.
The storm outside raged on, but inside, a war for survival had just begun.
