Chapter 5 - THE RECKONING IN THE DARKThe east wing suite was pitch black except for the amber glow of the nightlight near Henry’s crib. Downstairs, the muffled pops of suppressed gunfire sounded like distant thunder, punctuated by the shattering of glass and the shouts of armed men moving through the grand halls.

Claire held Henry against her shoulder, rocking him gently while whispering soothing nonsense words into his curls, even as her own heart threatened to burst from her chest.

“Stay with our son,” Vincent’s voice echoed in her mind.

She knew she couldn't just cower in the dark waiting to die. If the intruders breached the upper level, the east wing would be their first target. She scanned the room frantically, looking for a secondary exit. Behind a heavy velvet tapestry on the far wall, a hidden service door stood slightly ajar—a panic room access chute leading down to the cliffside escape tunnels.

She rushed toward it, sliding open the heavy steel panel just as a loud explosion rocked the main staircase downstairs.

The power to the manor flickered and died, plunging the entire estate into absolute darkness.

Through the open doorway of the suite, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Boots on hardwood.

Claire froze, half inside the secret passage. She held her breath, praying Henry wouldn't make a sound.

A shadow darkened the doorway. A man holding an assault rifle stepped into the room, his night-vision goggles casting an eerie green glow across his tactical gear. He swept the barrel of his rifle across the empty bed, then turned toward the crib.

"Clear," the intruder muttered into a comms link.

"Not quite," a cold voice whispered from the shadows behind him.

The intruder spun around, but it was already too late.

A dark figure materialized from the corner of the room like a ghost. A heavy blow landed with a sickening crunch against the intruder's helmet, sending the armed man crashing to the floor unconscious.

Vincent stepped into the dim amber light of the nightlight. His dark sweater was torn at the shoulder, and a dark streak of blood smeared across his cheek, but his eyes were blazing with adrenaline and absolute focus.

"Claire," he breathed, dropping his empty pistol and rushing toward her. "Are you alright?"

"We're fine! Are you hurt?" Claire gasped, dropping her phone as she reached out to touch his face, her fingers checking for wounds.

"It's not mine," Vincent said grimly, grabbing her hand and pulling her toward the secret passage. "We need to move. There are more coming up the south stairwell."

"Did you—"

"They’re neutralized," Vincent interrupted, shoving open the heavy steel door of the escape tunnel. "Get inside. Down the stairs, fifty yards out, there’s a boathouse with a secured launch. My security team is waiting there."

"I'm not leaving you here alone," Claire said fiercely, planting her feet.

"Claire, listen to me!" Vincent gripped her shoulders, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "My entire life has been about violence, enemies, and blood. I survived all of it because I had nothing to lose. But now... now I have everything." He pressed his forehead against hers, his breathing heavy. "Take my son and get to safety. That is the only way I can finish this."

Before she could argue, the sound of boots pounding down the hallway grew deafening.

Vincent pushed her gently inside the dark tunnel, slammed the heavy steel bulkhead shut, and locked it from the outside.

May you like

Claire screamed his name, pounding her fists against the cold iron, but the only response was the sound of gunfire erupting once again on the other side of the wall.

Clutching Henry tightly to her chest, tears streaming down her face, Claire turned and ran down the dark stone steps toward the ocean.
