Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Hawthorne EstateThe flashbulbs outside the Plaza Hotel were blinding.

By midnight, the story had broken across every major news network and financial blog in the country: Tech Titan and Socialite Wife Arrested in Stunning Gala Ambush. Headlines screamed about corporate espionage, attempted poisoning, and the spectacular public downfall of Daniel Mercer.

Inside the quiet, bulletproof interior of a black Lincoln Navigator idling in the alleyway, Claire sat in silence.

She had changed into a clean, sharp charcoal pantsuit. The stinging on her neck had subsided into a dull, manageable ache, treated by a private paramedic team on standby. Beside her sat Marcus Reed, tapping calmly on a secure tablet.

“The asset freeze orders have been signed by the federal magistrate,” Marcus reported without looking up. “Every account Daniel touched has been locked. His personal credit cards were declined twenty minutes ago at the precinct holding desk.”

Claire looked out the tinted window toward the swirling red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement. “And Vanessa?”

“Crying in an interrogation room because her designer handbag was confiscated as potential evidence,” Marcus smirked faintly. “She’s already offering to testify against Daniel in exchange for a lighter sentence. Typical.”

“Let them tear each other apart,” Claire said quietly. “They deserve every minute of it.”

The Navigator pulled away from the curb, sliding smoothly into the stream of late-night Manhattan traffic, heading north toward Westchester County.

An hour later, the heavy iron gates of Hawthorne Estate swung open automatically as the vehicle approached. The sprawling, ivy-covered stone mansion loomed majestically against the starlit sky. For generations, this estate had been the fortress of the Hawthorne family—a dynasty built on sharp intellect, ruthless financial acumen, and an absolute intolerance for betrayal.

Claire stepped out of the car, breathing in the crisp autumn air. Her lungs expanded fully. No allergy mask. No constriction. Just pure, unadulterated freedom.

As she walked up the grand stone steps, the heavy oak front door swung open. Standing in the foyer wasn't a butler or a housekeeper, but a tall, imposing man with piercing silver hair and sharp hazel eyes that matched Claire’s own.

Arthur Hawthorne. Her grandfather, and the legendary patriarch who had supposedly retired from the corporate world a decade ago.

“You look like you’ve had a busy evening, pumpkin,” Arthur said, his stern face softening slightly as he stepped forward to wrap a warm cashmere shawl around her shoulders.

Claire leaned into her grandfather’s embrace, letting out a long, shuddering breath. “It was loud, Grandfather. But the house is quiet now.”

“Good,” Arthur murmured, kissing the top of her head. “Because the real work starts tomorrow. You just reclaimed the entire eastern seaboard portfolio, and the board of directors is waiting for your opening address on Monday morning. Are you ready to run the empire?”

May you like

Claire looked past her grandfather into the sprawling, warm-lit foyer of her childhood home. The ghosts of the past were gone, swept away by truth and cold-calculated justice.

“I was born ready,” Claire said, her voice steady and unyielding.
