Chapter 3 - The Retaliation & The TrapBy forty-eight hours after the night of the ruined engagement party, the media storm surrounding Blackstone Ridge had reached a global fever pitch.

Sensationalist headlines dominated news networks across the country: “BILLIONAIRE EXPOSES FIANCÉE AND BROTHER IN $22M EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL!” “HOUSEKEEPER SAVES MERCER ENTERPRISES FROM HOSTILE TAKEOVER!” “THE FLOWER ROOM HORROR: NASHVILLE HIGH SOCIETY IN SHOCK!”
However, wealth and corruption do not surrender quietly.
On Tuesday morning, Julian Sterling—using his vast network of media contacts and high-priced legal teams—launched a desperate, vicious counter-offensive.
By 9:00 AM, Sloane Whitaker’s high-profile criminal defense attorney, Julian Vance (no relation to Arthur Vance, but equally ruthless), called a press conference on the steps of the courthouse.
Standing beside a tearful, pale Sloane—who had managed to secure a temporary $5 million bail funded through a mysterious offshore trust linked to Sterling Holdings—the attorney spoke into a wall of news microphones.
“My client, Sloane Whitaker, is an innocent victim of a dark, orchestrated smear campaign,” Vance declared passionately to the reporters. “The truth is that Cole Mercer suffered a severe psychological breakdown on the night in question. He has been engaging in an improper, coercive relationship with his housekeeper, Hannah Parker. When Miss Whitaker discovered this affair and confronted Miss Parker regarding stolen family heirlooms, Cole Mercer staged this entire scene to destroy my client’s reputation and cover up his own corporate misconduct!”
Inside the private executive office at Mercer Enterprises headquarters, Cole watched the live broadcast on the wall-mounted television.
Sitting across from him were Harrison Reed and Arthur Vance—the seasoned corporate attorney Cole had retained to manage the civil and criminal fallout.
“They’re going for a total mud-slinging defense,” Arthur Vance stated, tossing a legal file onto Cole’s desk. “They know the financial evidence against Grant and Sloane is airtight. So their only play is to attack Hannah’s character, paint you as an unstable, tyrannical billionaire, and create enough public doubt to turn a jury.”
Cole’s eyes were cold as granite. “Where is Grant?”
“Julian Sterling’s legal team posted his $10 million bail an hour ago,” Harrison revealed grimly. “Grant is currently staying at a private estate owned by Sterling in Franklin. They’ve surrounded the property with private security guards.”
“They’re hiding him,” Cole said.
“Worse,” Harrison warned, leaning forward. “My intelligence sources indicate that Grant and Sterling realize they are facing guaranteed federal prison time once the grand jury convenes on Friday. They are preparing to flee the country. A private Gulfstream jet has been chartered out of a private airfield in Murfreesboro for midnight tonight, bound for a non-extradition territory in South America.”
Cole stood up from his desk and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Nashville.
“They think they can slander Hannah, destroy her name, and fly away with Sterling’s money?” Cole asked softly.
“Not if we spring the trap first,” Arthur Vance smiled wolfishly.
“What do you mean?” Cole turned around.
Arthur pulled a tablet from his briefcase and tapped the screen. “When Grant accessed the offshore servers on Friday night, he didn't just try to wipe the financial records. He attempted to transfer a final batch of $5 million out of Mercer Enterprises’ primary reserve vault.”
Cole frowned. “I froze those accounts on Saturday morning.”
“Exactly,” Arthur said, his eyes gleaming with tactical brilliant. “The transfer is currently trapped in a pending clearinghouse state. It requires a dual-biometric authorization from two senior executives to either release... or permanently trace its origin point.”
Cole understood instantly. “Grant needs my private encryption key to clear the transfer so he has operating capital for his escape.”
“And he knows he can’t get it from you,” Harrison added. “Which means Grant is going to do something desperate tonight before his flight. He’s going to try to break into Blackstone Ridge’s private server room in the east wing to physically bypass the security array.”
Cole looked at Harrison. “Is Hannah safe?”
“She and Maisie are under twenty-four-hour guard in the master suite, supported by three of my top former-special-forces operators,” Harrison assured him. “The estate is a fortress.”
“No,” Cole said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, calculated tone. “We don't keep Blackstone Ridge a fortress tonight. We open the gate.”
Arthur and Harrison looked at him, surprised.
“Cole?” Arthur asked. “What are you planning?”
“If Grant and Sterling want to play their final hand, let them,” Cole said, walking back to his desk. “We give Grant the illusion that the security detail at the estate has been relaxed due to the press chaos. We let him enter the east wing server room. And when he plugs his drive into that array...”
“We catch him on federal wiretapping, breaking and entering, and treasonous corporate espionage in real-time,” Harrison finished, a slow, lethal grin spreading across his face.
“And what about Sloane’s smear campaign on television?” Arthur asked.
Cole reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a sleek, black flash drive—the drive he had recovered from Sloane’s clutch on the night of the party.
“Call a national press conference for 6:00 PM tonight at the Hermitage Hotel,” Cole commanded Arthur. “Tell every network anchor in the country that Cole Mercer is going to air the unedited, full-spectrum 4K environmental security footage from the basement potting room.”
Arthur blinked. “Environmental footage? I thought the potting room didn't have cameras?”
Cole smiled—a cold, sharp, victorious smile.
“The potting room didn't,” Cole revealed. “But eight months ago, I installed high-definition environmental monitoring systems throughout the lower service corridors to track humidity levels for the estate’s rare botanical collections. It records continuous video and audio.”

Arthur let out a burst of laughter. “Sloane’s lawyer just told national television that Hannah was lying about being locked up.”
“By six-fifteen tonight,” Cole declared quietly, “Sloane Whitaker will be the most reviled woman in America. And by midnight, my brother will be in federal custody for the rest of his life.”
