Chapter 5 - Cleansing the Empire

By sunrise, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, golden morning over Lake Michigan.

The news outlets across Illinois were already in a frenzy. Senator Vale had been arrested at his high-rise penthouse at 5:00 AM by federal agents after a massive folder of unencrypted evidence detailing bribery, extortion, and attempted murder was mysteriously dropped on the doorstep of the U.S. Attorney’s office.

The Donati syndicate had collapsed overnight, its remaining capos fleeing the state or surrendering their territories to the Moretti family without a single shot fired.

Inside the Gold Coast mansion, the atmosphere was entirely transformed.

The dark, oppressive curtains that had blocked out the sun during Vincent’s illness were thrown open, filling the marble halls with brilliant sunlight. The aroma of fresh cinnamon rolls and brewed coffee filled the service kitchen—not made by a stressed staff, but made by my mother, who smiled as she worked beside the mansion's chef.

I was sitting in the sunlit breakfast nook, wearing a cozy new yellow sweater and eating pancakes, when Vincent entered the room.

He no longer looked like the cold, terrifying mafia Don from the docks. He wore a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking relaxed, happy, and whole.

"Good morning, little mouse," Vincent said, leaning down to kiss the top of my head before sitting beside me.

"Good morning, Daddy," I smiled, passing him a plate of fruit. "Did you fix the bad people?"

Vincent chuckled softly, taking a piece of apple. "The bad people won't ever bother us again, Lily. From now on, this house is going to be filled with better things."

My mother walked over carrying a pot of fresh coffee, pouring a cup for Vincent. Her eyes were bright, free of the fear and exhaustion that had weighed her down for years.

Vincent caught her hand as she set the pot down, gently pulling her down to sit beside him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—much different from the dark pouch Vanessa had hidden beneath his pillow.

He opened it, revealing a stunning platinum ring set with a brilliant, cushion-cut emerald surrounded by diamonds.

Nora gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "Vincent... what is this?"

"Nine years ago, I promised I would make you my wife," Vincent said, his voice deep and full of devotion. "Lies and evil men tore us apart, but you kept our daughter safe. You brought her back to me. Nora, I don't want another day to pass where you are not the undisputed mistress of this house and the queen of my heart. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure happiness welled up in my mother’s eyes. She looked at me, and I gave her a big, enthusiastic nod.

May you like

"Yes," Nora whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, Vincent! A thousand times yes!"

Vincent slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss as I clapped my hands happily from across the table.
