Chapter 4 - The TransformationThe transition from Maya Vance, the invisible diner waitress, to a woman who could command the attention of a room full of billionaires did not happen overnight, but in the sterile, high-security luxury of Dante Thorne’s penthouse, it felt like magic.

For forty-eight hours, I was subjected to a whirlwind of stylists, tailors, makeup artists, and private tutors. They stripped away the mousy brown hair, replacing it with a rich, midnight-black cascade that fell in polished waves down my back. They reshaped my wardrobe, trading cheap thrift-store sweaters for a bespoke, backless crimson silk gown that hugged my frame like liquid fire.

When I finally stepped in front of the full-length mirror in the penthouse dressing suite, I didn't recognize the girl staring back.

The hollow eyes were still mine, but they no longer held fear. They burned with a cold, focused fire. The shoulders that had spent years folding inward were pulled back, displaying a posture of absolute, unyielding grace.

Dante stood leaning against the doorframe, watching me through the mirror reflection. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo that matched the sharp elegance of my gown. For a long moment, even the powerful mafia boss seemed to lose his words.

"Well?" I asked, turning to face him, my heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. "Does the weapon pass inspection?"

Dante pushed off the doorframe and walked toward me, his steps unhurried and predatory. He stopped inches away, his gaze tracing the neckline of the dress before rising to meet my eyes.

"Inspection passed," he murmured, his voice low and rich. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy velvet box. Opening it, he revealed a diamond necklace that looked like frozen starlight, catching the penthouse lights. "This belonged to my mother. It’s an heirloom of the Thorne family. When you wear this tonight, every person in that ballroom will know whose protection you carry."

I hesitated, looking at the blinding stones. "Dante... if this goes wrong. If Sterling recognizes me, or if his security teams—"

"They won't," Dante interrupted, gently lifting the necklace from the box and fastening it around my neck. His fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of my nape, sending a sudden, electric shiver down my spine. "Because tonight, Marcus Sterling will be too busy trying to keep his empire from collapsing to notice ghosts."

Forty minutes later, Dante’s bulletproof Maybach glided through the wrought-iron gates of the Manhattan Plaza Hotel, where the city's elite had gathered for the annual Sterling Foundation Gala.

Flashbulbs popped like lightning storms against the tinted windows as we pulled up to the red carpet. My palms turned slick with cold sweat, and for a second, my old self—the frightened girl from Mel’s Diner—threatened to claw its way back to the surface.

Dante noticed. Without a word, he slid his hand over mine, his grip warm, firm, and grounding.

"Remember," he whispered as the chauffeur opened the door. "You are not invisible. You never were."

When I stepped out of the car onto the red carpet, flashbulbs exploded with blinding intensity. Microphones thrust forward, and gossip columnists gasped. But it wasn't Dante they were staring at. It was the mystery woman on his arm—the woman wearing the Thorne family heirloom, walking with the posture of a queen taking back her throne.

And standing near the grand staircase inside the lobby, holding a glass of champagne and laughing with a group of investors, was Marcus Sterling himself.
