Chapter 5 - The Chessboard and the BladeThe ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, orchestral waltzes, and whispered political conspiracies disguised as polite conversation. As Dante and I entered, the ambient chatter dropped noticeably. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through tall grass.

“Who is she?” “Dante Thorne doesn't take dates to public events. Never.” “Is she from the European families?”

I kept my chin high, my expression a mask of cool, aristocratic indifference. Every step felt like walking across a tightrope suspended over a sea of sharks, but Dante’s hand locked firmly around my waist, guiding me with absolute dominion.

Across the room, Marcus Sterling caught sight of us.

I watched the exact moment his eyes drifted over Dante and landed on my face. The glass of champagne in his hand froze midway to his lips. His ruddy face drained of color, his jaw going slack as a ghost from his past materialized in a crimson silk gown worth more than my old car.

He knew. Even after twenty years, the resemblance to Robert Vance in the sharp line of my jaw and the shape of my eyes was undeniable.

Marcus excused himself abruptly from his group of investors, nearly dropping his glass, and began power-walking across the polished parquet floor straight toward us, his face twisting in a mask of panic and suppressed rage.

"Dante," Marcus said, his voice tight and breathless as he intercepted us near the edge of the fountain. He forced a strained, oily smile. "I didn't realize you were bringing a guest tonight. Especially... someone so unexpected."

Dante didn't smile. His eyes were glacial. "Marcus. Allow me to introduce you to Maya Vance."

The name dropped like a guillotine blade.

Marcus flinched visibly. He stared at me, his eyes wide with terror. "Vance? I... I don't know any Vance. There must be some mistake—"

"There's no mistake, Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice cutting through the orchestral music with crystal clarity, drawing the attention of half the surrounding tables. "We share a history. You knew my father very well. At the Red Hook docks, right before his brakes failed."

Panic flared in Marcus’s eyes. He glanced wildly around, realizing that reporters and business rivals were beginning to lean in closer, sensing blood in the water.

"You—you're out of your mind," Marcus sputtered, his voice rising in panic. "Guards! Remove this hysterical girl from the premises immediately—"

"Nobody touches her," Dante commanded, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of a death sentence. The two bodyguards who had followed us in materialized behind Marcus instantly, blocking any escape route.

"You can't do this in broad daylight, Thorne!" Marcus hissed, sweating profusely under his collar. "This is a public event! You're a monster—you're both monsters!"

"No, Marcus," I stepped forward, looking down at the man who had stolen my childhood, my mother’s happiness, and my father’s life. "We are just the bill coming due."

Before Marcus could scream for help, Dante pulled a sleek tablet from his inner pocket and tapped the screen. Instantly, the massive projector screens hanging above the ballroom—supposedly broadcasting the gala's charity metrics—flickered.

The live feed cut away, replacing the charity logos with scanned financial documents, audio transcripts of Marcus conspiring with corrupt mechanics, and bank wire transfers routing millions from shell companies directly into his personal accounts.

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Marcus stared up at the screen, his knees buckling beneath him. His empire, built on murder, embezzlement, and lies, was disintegrating in real time before the eyes of every powerful man and woman in New York City.
