Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormBefore Clara could answer, a sleek black sedan screeched to a halt outside her apartment building.

Grant’s instincts—honed by a lifetime of corporate warfare and assassination attempts on his family’s legacy—snapped into high gear instantly. He spun around, pulling Clara back behind the doorframe just as the rear doors of the sedan flew open.

Three men in tactical black jackets stepped out, drawing silenced firearms.

"Get down!" Grant roared, shoving Clara inside and slamming the heavy oak door shut, throwing the deadbolt and the security chain into place.

"What is happening?" Clara gasped, her face turning pale as terror gripped her throat. "The babies—"

"Arthur Voss's loyalists," Grant cursed under his breath, his hand instantly dipping beneath his coat toward his concealed firearm. "When I stepped down from the board today, they thought I was vulnerable. They tracked me here."

"They know where my children are?" Clara’s maternal panic flared into a lethal, incandescent rage that overshadowed her fear. This was her sanctuary. This was where her babies slept.

"They won't get past the hallway," Grant said coldly, his voice shifting instantly from a broken, pleading man back into the ruthless apex predator who ruled Chicago’s underworld boardrooms.

He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a single speed-dial code.

"Vincent. Perimeter breached at the Wicker Park safe zone. Bring the rapid-response detail through the rear alley. Neutralize everyone."

“On my way, Boss,” Vincent’s gravelly voice crackled over the secure speaker. “Ten seconds.”

Outside the apartment door, heavy boots pounded up the wooden stairs. A muffled shout echoed, followed immediately by the terrifying screech of a crowbar jamming into the doorframe.

Clara didn't scream. She ran straight to the nursery, scooping sleeping Chloe into her arms while grabbing Leo and Maya from their cribs, pulling them into the reinforced panic room behind the master closet—a safety feature Grant had secretly had installed three months ago through a third-party contractor without her knowing.

"Stay here," Grant ordered, standing at the threshold of the panic room with his weapon drawn, his eyes locked on the front entrance.

"Grant—"

"I protected myself for thirty-six years by shutting everyone out," Grant said, looking back at her with absolute, unyielding devotion. "Today, I protect my family by destroying anyone who threatens them."

The front door exploded inward with a deafening crash as the mercenaries breached the deadbolts.

What followed was thirty seconds of pure, calibrated violence in the hallway. Suppressed gunfire spat through the air, followed by the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor. Vincent and his security detail moved through the stairwell with surgical precision, clearing the threat before it could ever reach the nursery door.

Silence descended upon the apartment once more, broken only by the distant wail of a police siren approaching down the street.
