Chapter 4 - The Recovery of the HeartIn the weeks that followed the exposure of the Vance family plot, Moretti Manor—now officially cleansed of its toxic elements—underwent a quiet, radical transformation.

The news of Senator Arthur Vance and his daughter Serena’s arrest sent shockwaves through Chicago’s high society and political circles. Lorenzo handled the legal fallout with surgical precision, utilizing his vast resources to ensure the story was framed entirely around the attempted murder of an infant heir, completely insulating Nico from public spectacle.
Dr. Crane surrendered his medical license before his formal trial, providing full state’s evidence against the Vances in exchange for a reduced sentence. Serena and Arthur were remanded without bail to a federal detention facility, awaiting trial for conspiracy to commit murder.
Meanwhile, at the estate, the atmosphere shifted from a cold, guarded fortress to a true home.
Nico’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Without the daily micro-doses of toxin, his body flushed out the remaining chemical residue within a week. His appetite quadrupled, his pale skin turned a healthy, rosy peach, and he began making rapid developmental leaps—crawling across the plush living room rugs, laughing loudly, and pulling himself up against the furniture.
Maya had intended to leave after her extended two-week contract expired. She had packed her small canvas suitcase and was preparing to call a taxi on a crisp afternoon in late February.
She stood in the grand foyer, holding her coat, when Lorenzo walked down the staircase.
He was dressed in a casual charcoal sweater and dark trousers, looking less like a ruthless crime boss and more like a striking, powerful man at ease in his own world.
He saw the suitcase beside her feet, and his eyes darkened slightly.
“You’re leaving,” Lorenzo said, stopping at the bottom step.
“My contract ended today, Lorenzo,” Maya said, offering a soft, professional smile. “Nico is entirely healthy. His blood panels are spotless, he’s hitting every milestone, and your new nursing staff—the ones vetted through your private security—are exceptional.”
Lorenzo walked toward her, his heavy steps slow and deliberate. He stopped just inches away, his towering presence wrapping around her like a warm blanket.
“The nursing staff is competent,” Lorenzo admitted, his voice low and deep. “But they aren't you.”
Maya looked down at her shoes, feeling her pulse quicken. “Lorenzo... I’m a pediatric nurse. My job was to save your son. I did my job.”
“You saved my son, Maya,” Lorenzo said gently, reaching out to take her hand. His warm fingers wrapped around hers, refusing to let go. “And in doing so, you saved me. Before you walked through that door four weeks ago, this house was a tomb. I was a man waiting for my son to die so I could tear this city apart in revenge. You brought life back into these walls.”
“Lorenzo...”
“Don't tell me about professional boundaries, Maya,” he interrupted softly, his hazel eyes searching hers with intense vulnerability. “I’ve watched you care for my child with a tenderness his own blood relatives never possessed. I’ve watched you stand up to powerful men without blinking. And for the first time in ten years, I find myself looking forward to coming home every single day... just to see your smile.”
Maya felt a lump form in her throat. She had spent five years in hospital wards protecting herself behind a wall of professional detachment. She had seen heartbreak, tragedy, and coldness. But standing here with Lorenzo, feeling the genuine, fiercely protective warmth of his hand, her defenses crumbled.
“I care about him, Lorenzo,” Maya confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I care about Nico more than I should.”
Lorenzo stepped closer, his free hand rising to cup her cheek, his thumb gently tracing her cheekbone.
“And what about his father?” Lorenzo whispered.
Maya looked up into his dark, intense eyes, seeing the raw honesty reflecting back at her. She didn't answer with words. Instead, she leaned up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips softly against his.
The kiss was gentle at first—a hesitant question asked in the quiet hallway of a grand house. But as Lorenzo’s arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her firmly against his chest, the kiss deepened into a deep, passionate promise.
When they finally broke apart, resting their foreheads together, Lorenzo let out a soft, contented breath.

“Stay,” Lorenzo whispered against her lips. “Not as a nurse. As my partner. As the woman who belongs here.”
Maya smiled, a tear of pure joy slipping down her cheek. “I’ll stay.”
