Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastSpring arrived in Lake Forest with a vibrant burst of green. The snow melted from the lawns of the Bellaro estate, replaced by blooming tulips and warm, golden sunshine that filled the once-gloomy mansion.

However, the transition from a solitary life to being the partner of Lorenzo Bellaro was not without its challenges.

While Lorenzo had dismantled the internal threat within his household, his position as the leader of the Bellaro syndicate meant that external rivalries occasionally cast shadows over their new happiness.

In April, the Commission—a council of Chicago’s five major organized crime families—called an emergency summit at a private club in downtown Chicago. Rumors had been circulating that Lorenzo was going soft, that his focus had been compromised by his infant son and a common hospital nurse.

Sal Valenti, the ruthless head of the West Side syndicate, saw Lorenzo’s internal family legal drama as an opportunity to push for control of the Bellaro shipping docks.

On the night of the summit, Lorenzo dressed in a sharp, dark suit. As he adjusted his cufflinks in the master bedroom, Maya walked up behind him, carrying his silk tie.

She stood behind him in the mirror, her dark hair falling gracefully over a simple emerald dress. Over the past two months, she had adapted to her new role with remarkable poise—never compromising her values, yet standing firmly beside Lorenzo as an equal.

“They think you’re vulnerable,” Maya said quietly, wrapping the tie around his collar and tying a flawless Windsor knot.

Lorenzo looked at her reflection in the mirror, his dark eyes brimming with pride. “They think that because I removed corrupt family members, my house is weak. They don't understand that a house cleared of rot is stronger than ever.”

“Valenti will test you tonight,” Maya warned, pulling the knot taut against his neck. “Marco told me Valenti has been gathering men near the South Side yards.”

Lorenzo turned around, taking her face in his hands. “Let him test me. Before I met you, I fought because it was all I knew. Now, I fight because I have everything to protect. There is a vast difference, Maya.”

He kissed her deeply before stepping out the door, leaving Marco and six heavily armed security personnel at the estate to guard Maya and Nico.

The summit at the Blackthorn Club was tense. The air inside the cigar-smoke-filled boardroom was thick with hostility. Sal Valenti—a heavy-set man with pockmarked skin and slicked-back gray hair—sat across the long oak table, sneering at Lorenzo.

“We heard about your in-laws, Bellaro,” Valenti mocked, lighting a cigar. “A state senator and his daughter going to federal prison for trying to poison a baby. Sounds like your house is out of control. Maybe you’re too distracted by nursery rhymes to manage the Indiana shipping docks.”

The other family bosses sat in silence, watching to see how Lorenzo would react.

Lorenzo didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his hand on the table. He simply pulled a thick leather folder from his jacket and tossed it onto the center of the table.

“In that folder, Valenti,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a icy, terrifying register, “are the deeds to three of your primary distribution warehouses in Gary. Purchased through front companies over the last forty-eight hours.”

Valenti’s sneer froze. “What?”

“While you were busy listening to gossip about my household,” Lorenzo continued smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair, “I bought your debt from the offshore backers who funded your last shipment. You owe my firm fourteen million dollars, payable by midnight tomorrow.”

Valenti stood up, his chair clattering backward. “You can’t do that!”

“I already did,” Lorenzo said, standing up smoothly, buttoning his jacket. He looked around the table at the gathered leaders of Chicago’s underworld. “Let me make one thing absolute clear to everyone in this room. My family is secure. My son is thriving. And the woman who stands beside me has more courage in her little finger than all of you combined. If anyone tests my border again, I won't just take your docks. I will take everything you own.”

Lorenzo walked out of the boardroom, leaving the Commission in stunned, absolute silence.

When he returned to the estate two hours later, he found Maya sitting in the sunroom, reading a medical journal while Nico slept peacefully in a portable crib beside her.

Lorenzo walked over, unbuttoning his vest, and sat down on the sofa beside her. He pulled her into his lap, burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her sweet, calming scent.

“How was the meeting?” Maya asked softly, her fingers running through his dark hair.

“Quiet,” Lorenzo murmured, a faint smile touching his lips. “They remembered who runs this city.”
