Chapter 1 - The Descent into the Crypt

The damp, stone-scented air of the sub-basement clung to Sophia’s skin like frost as she sprinted down the remaining cellar stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs. She scooped three-year-old Emma into her arms, pulling the toddler away from the iron chair where Lorenzo Duca—the absolute ruler of the city's underworld—slumped, battered and bound.

"Mama, the bad man is tied up," Emma whispered, burying her face into Sophia’s shoulder, clutching her broken pink scissors like a shield.

Sophia’s hands shook as she checked Lorenzo’s pulse. It was erratic, thready, but alive. The industrial plastic zip-ties biting into his wrists were dug deep into bruised flesh, and the black duct tape across his mouth was wet with crimson.

When Lorenzo's eyelids flickered open, he didn't look at Sophia. His gaze shot upward toward the ceiling grates that led to the upper kitchens, then to the heavy oak door at the bottom of the stairs. With a supreme effort that strained every muscle in his blood-soaked frame, he forced a low, guttural growl through the tape.

“Vincent.”

The name dropped into the dark cellar like a lead weight.

Sophia’s breath caught. Just twenty minutes ago, while sweeping the main corridor, she had glanced into Lorenzo’s private study. Vincent Romano—Lorenzo’s shadow, his second-in-command, the man everyone considered a brother to the boss—had been sitting in Lorenzo’s high-backed leather chair, spinning a gold signet ring and smiling an empty, predatory smile.

At the time, Sophia had thought nothing of it. Now, the image burned into her mind with terrifying clarity. Vincent hadn't been waiting for his friend. He had been claiming the throne.

"Don't move, Mr. Duca," Sophia whispered urgently, her maternal protective instincts warring with survival terror. "The doctor is coming. We're getting you out of here."

Before Lorenzo could shake his head in warning, heavy footsteps echoed on the stone stairs above.
