Chapter 1 - The Confession in the Gallery

The security monitor flickered in the dimly lit control room, casting a cold blue light over the faces of the thirty staff members gathered in the hall. On screen, Renata Voss’s reflection moved with calculated precision in the dark gallery, dropping the antique gold watch into Elena Brooks’s locker before sliding the lock shut with a faint, metallic click.

Renata stared at the screen, her composure finally shattering. For a fraction of a second, her lips parted, but no sound came out.

"You've managed this house for nearly forty years, Renata," Adrian Valenti said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that made the security director step back. "My father trusted you. I trusted you. And you used that authority to frame a single mother just to keep your own operations buried."

"She didn't belong here!" Renata suddenly snapped, her voice rising in defensive fury as she glared at Elena, who was holding Mia tightly against her chest. "People like her—weak, unbonded, bringing children into a house of power—they become liabilities! I protected this family when your father was in the ground, Adrian! I cleared out the disloyal, the careless, and the outsiders!"

"You didn't protect the family, Renata," Adrian said, stepping closer until he towered over her. "You built a private kingdom inside my walls, screening who stayed and who went based on your own hidden agenda. What else have you hidden in my estate?"

Before Renata could answer, Adrian signaled his security director. "Lock her in the lower holding room. Strip her of her credentials. And confiscate every personal ledger, phone, and key she possesses."

As two enforcers escorted a furious, unrepentant Renata down the corridor, the great hall returned to a stunned silence. Adrian turned back to Elena and Mia. The little girl was still clutching her damaged stuffed rabbit, staring up at him with wide, trusting eyes.

"You're safe here, Elena," Adrian said quietly, his expression softening just enough for only them to notice. "Take the rest of the week off. See the house doctor for Mia's checkup. Your position here isn't just secure—it's permanent."
