Chapter 6 - A Promise Kept

A year later, the Long Island estate felt less like a fortress and more like an actual home.
The dark corners and cold formalities had given way to laughter, sunlight, and the bright, chaotic energy of a five-year-old girl who treated the most feared man in the New York underworld like an oversized, dependable older brother.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, Adrian sat on the garden bench beneath the red maple tree, helping Mia stitch a new felt eye onto her beloved stuffed rabbit, Mr. Whiskers. His large, calloused fingers handled the needle with surprising, clumsy care while Mia directed operations with absolute authority.
Elena walked up the gravel path, holding a tray of fresh lemonade, watching the two of them with a deep, quiet gratitude that words could never fully capture.
Adrian looked up, meeting her eyes through the golden autumn leaves.
"How's the stitching?" Elena asked, smiling.
"Better than my last corporate merger," Adrian replied, tying off the thread with a neat knot and handing the rabbit back to a delighted Mia.
Mia hugged Mr. Whiskers tightly, then ran off toward the lawn to show Rex her repaired friend.
Adrian stood up, brushing off his trousers, and stepped closer to Elena. The silence between them wasn't heavy anymore; it was comfortable, earned, and absolute.

"You promised me once you'd find out what happened," Elena murmured softly, looking up at him.
"I always keep my promises, Elena," Adrian said, taking her hand in his. "Especially the ones that change my life."
