Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

By the weekend, the storm clouds over the Long Island estate had cleared, replaced by a crisp, golden autumn afternoon.

In the east wing, Elena Brooks sat at a small oak desk in the newly renovated staff quarters, organizing inventory schedules. Her mind was still reeling from the events of Tuesday night. A week ago, she had been a struggling single mother living in constant fear of losing her job and her home; now, she had a permanent position, comprehensive medical coverage for Mia, and a debt-free slate.

There was a soft knock at the open door.

Adrian Valenti stood in the doorway. Without his heavy wool overcoat and security detail, looking slightly more human in a simple charcoal sweater, he looked less like an underworld kingpin and more like a man exhausted by his own responsibilities.

"Mr. Valenti," Elena said, quickly standing up. "Is there something you need? I can have the tea brought out to the terrace—"

"Sit down, Elena," Adrian interrupted gently, walking into the room. He looked down at Mia, who was sitting on the rug playing quietly with her one-eyed rabbit while Rex the Doberman napped beside her. "I didn't come for tea."

"I... I just wanted to thank you," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly. "For what you did on Tuesday. For believing Mia."

"Mia tells the truth," Adrian replied simply. "Adults are the ones who complicate things." He paused, pulling a small, secure keycard from his pocket and placing it on the desk. "This grants access to the private family elevator and the secure medical wing. If you or Mia ever need anything in this house, you don't go through administration. You come directly to me."

Elena stared at the keycard. "Mr. Valenti, I'm just a housekeeper—"

"You're someone who keeps her heart in the right place," Adrian corrected quietly. "In my world, that is a rare currency. Protect it."
