Chapter 2 - The Don SpeaksIn the master study, Lorenzo was staring out the window into the whiteout condition of the storm when a harsh, metallic chime echoed from the corner of his desk.

He froze.
The sound was not coming from his modern satellite phone, nor was it coming from the high-tech estate security panel mounted on the wall. It was coming from a brass box mounted beneath the lip of the mahogany desk—a mechanical relic installed by his father in 1984.
The code was three short chimes.
Emergency line. Room 4B.
Lorenzo’s eyes widened slightly, a rare crack in his icy composure. That line had not chimed since the night his father suffered his massive stroke fifteen years ago. His heart pounding with a sudden, surging adrenaline, Lorenzo strode across the room, grabbed a heavy, custom-designed 9mm pistol from his desk drawer, clicked off the safety, and moved out into the hallway.
"Bodyguards! With me!" Lorenzo barked as he strode down the grand corridor. Four heavily armed men instantly fell into formation behind him, their tactical boots thudding against the marble floors.
Meanwhile, in the grand foyer, Mrs. Gable was violently pushing Nora toward the center of the room. Nora stumbled, dropping to her knees on the cold marble floor, sobbing as she held her lower abdomen. The physical stress of the evening, combined with the bitter cold and the rough treatment, had triggered a sharp, terrifying contraction in her stomach.
"Stand up, you dramatic idiot!" Mrs. Gable hissed, kicking Nora’s foot. "You're going to tell Mr. Moretti that you've been stealing food and supplies for months. You're going to take the blame for the inventory discrepancies, or I will make sure the police throw you in a freezing jail cell before the sun rises!"
"I didn't steal anything..." Nora wept, her face pale, sweat breaking out on her forehead despite the chill in the room. "I only wanted to keep him warm... he was dying in that room..."
"Shut your mouth!" Mrs. Gable raised her hand, backheading Nora across the cheek with a sharp, echoing CRACK.
Nora gasped, falling sideways onto the marble, her hand instinctively cupping her bruised face.
"What is the meaning of this?"
Lorenzo’s voice echoed like thunder through the cavernous foyer. He stood at the top of the grand staircase, his heavy boots descending the steps with slow, lethal precision. His eyes swept over the scene—the trembling maid on the floor holding her swollen belly, the redness on her cheek, and Mrs. Gable standing over her with her hand still raised.
Mrs. Gable immediately put on a look of dramatic distress. "Oh, Mr. Moretti! Thank goodness you're here! I caught this... this street trash red-handed! She has been sneaking into the private pantries, stealing expensive wines, meats, and heating equipment! When I confronted her, she became violent! I had to order security to restrain her!"
Lorenzo reached the bottom of the stairs. He didn't look at Mrs. Gable. His eyes locked onto Nora.
He stepped closer, his tall, imposing shadow falling over her small frame. He noticed the oversized, faded maid's uniform, the raw, cracked hands, the visible bump of her pregnancy, and the fresh, red welt forming on her left cheek.
"Is this true?" Lorenzo asked, his voice deathly quiet.
Nora looked up into the piercing gray eyes of the most dangerous man in the state. She was terrified—her entire body was shaking—but as she looked at him, she thought of Old John back in that dark, freezing room, helpless and alone.
"I didn't steal wine," Nora choked out, her voice trembling but clear. "I took... I took milk, broth, and soup. And a blanket. Because your father... Old John... he was shivering in the dark. His room has no heat. The food they bring him is cold and rotten. They leave him in his own filth for days, sir. I couldn't... I couldn't just watch him die."
Mrs. Gable’s face drained of all color. "She’s lying! She’s a manipulative little wretch trying to save her own skin! Mr. Moretti, I assure you—"
"Silence," Lorenzo said. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer weight of the single word caused Mrs. Gable to choke on her breath.
Lorenzo looked back down at Nora. "You claim my father is neglected?"
"Go look at him!" Nora cried out, tears streaming down her face. "Go look at Room 4B! It’s an icebox! Ask Mrs. Gable why she cut the heat to the east wing! Ask her why she bought thin rags instead of proper blankets! He is a human being! He deserves dignity!"
Before Lorenzo could respond, the heavy elevator doors at the side of the grand foyer let out a mechanical ding.
Everyone in the foyer froze.
The private elevator led to only one place: the isolated upper corridors of the east wing. It was an old hydraulic lift, rarely used, and certainly not meant to operate without someone manually pulling the heavy bronze lever inside the cabin.
Slowly, the heavy brass doors slid open.
The entire foyer fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Even the storm outside seemed to mute itself against the glass.
Sitting inside the illuminated elevator cabin was Don Giovanni Moretti.
He was not slumped over. He was not looking at the floor with blank, senile eyes. His posture was straight, his chin lifted, his silver hair brushed neatly back from his forehead—a style he had worn for forty years as the head of the Moretti family. Wrapped tightly around his shoulders was the worn wool shawl Nora had given him, and across his lap lay the pink, glowing heated blanket.
Behind the wheelchair stood no one. He had rolled himself into the elevator using his left hand—the hand that everyone believed was completely paralyzed.
Lorenzo dropped his gun to his side, his eyes wide with absolute shock. "Father...?"
Mrs. Gable staggered back, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes bulging in sheer terror. "No... no, it’s impossible..."
Giovanni did not look at his son. He did not look at Mrs. Gable or the armed security guards who were now dropping to their knees in instinctive respect for the legendary Don.
Giovanni’s dark eyes locked entirely onto Nora, who was still kneeling on the marble floor, looking at him in utter disbelief.
Slowly, agonizingly, Giovanni raised his left hand. The movement was stiff, fraught with immense physical effort, but it was deliberate. He pointed a single, trembling finger directly at Mrs. Gable.
Then, for the first time in five long years, a sound tore through the throat of the silent old man.
It was a raspy, deep, gravelly growl, born from years of buried rage and unyielding authority.
"She..." Giovanni choked out, his vocal cords struggling against years of disuse. "...lies."
The room seemed to lose all air. Lorenzo turned his head slowly toward Mrs. Gable, his eyes turning from icy gray to a terrifying, pitch-black void.

Giovanni turned his head slightly, his gaze softening as he looked down at Nora. He raised his hand higher, beckoning her with a slow motion of his fingers.
"Nora..." the old Don said, his voice clearer this time, ringing through the vast marble foyer like a royal decree. "...come... here."
