Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the PastThe estate’s emergency medical suite—a state-of-the-art facility built into the underground level for the Don’s private care—was lit with bright, sterile fluorescent lights. Outside, the blizzard continued to rage, cutting off all road travel, but inside, a team of three private doctors and two nurses, who had been stationed in the staff quarters, worked feverishly around Nora’s bed.

Lorenzo stood in the corner of the room, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the heart monitor. Giovanni sat beside the bed in a high-backed ergonomic wheelchair, refusing to leave despite his own frail health. He held Nora’s limp hand in his left, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.

"She’s stabilizing, Mr. Moretti," the lead obstetrician announced, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The bleeding was caused by a partial placental abruption brought on by extreme physical exhaustion, severe stress, and trauma. If she had scrubbed floors for another day, she would have lost the child."

Giovanni let out a long, shuddering breath, his head bowing in silent relief.

"Is the baby okay?" Nora’s faint, hoarse voice broke the quiet of the room.

She was stirring awake, her eyes bleary from the sedatives and fluids being pumped into her IV line.

Lorenzo stepped forward instantly, leaning over the bed. "The baby is fine, Nora. She’s strong. Just like her mother."

Nora looked up at Lorenzo, then at Giovanni, who gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "John... you’re really talking," she whispered, a small, tearful smile breaking across her pale face. "I thought... I thought I was dreaming."

"Not... John," the old man said, a rare, warm smile cracking his weathered lips. "Giovanni. But to you... I am still... John."

"You need to rest now, Nora," Lorenzo said gently, pushing a lock of brown hair away from her damp forehead. "You don't have to worry about anything anymore. No work. No cold rooms. No Mrs. Gable. You are safe here."

Nora’s smile faded slightly, a heavy cloud of anxiety returning to her eyes. "My... my debts," she choked out, tears swelling again. "Brody... the man who got me pregnant... he left me with thousands of dollars in gambling debts. The loan sharks... they said they were going to find me. They said if I didn't pay, they’d take the baby..."

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened, the icy mafia prince returning in a fraction of a second. "Brody? What is his full name?"

"Brody... Brody Miller," Nora whimpered. "He used to hang around the illegal casinos in South Syracuse..."

Lorenzo turned his head slightly toward Marco, who was standing quietly near the door. Marco instantly nodded, pulling out a encrypted satellite tablet and typing rapidly.

"Consider the debt settled, Nora," Lorenzo said calmly, turning back to her with a tone so absolute it admitted no doubt. "Brody Miller will never trouble you or your child again. In fact, he no longer exists to this world."

"Please... don't hurt anyone because of me," Nora whispered, her gentle heart shrinking from the dark reality of the men standing around her.

Giovanni reached out, touching her chin gently. "Child... some men... are weeds. They must be... pulled... so the flower can grow."

Over the next two weeks, the Moretti estate underwent a silent, terrifying purge.

Every single employee who had participated in the neglect of Don Giovanni or the mistreatment of Nora was systematically fired, blacklisted from the industry, and subjected to financial ruin by Lorenzo’s corporate lawyers. Mrs. Gable was handed over to the federal authorities with a massive paper trail of her embezzlement, ensuring she would spend the rest of her natural life in a maximum-security prison.

Meanwhile, the east wing of the estate was entirely demolished and rebuilt.

Dozens of elite contractors were flown in via helicopter as the storm cleared. The cold, dark rooms were transformed into a sunlit, luxurious suite for Nora and a state-of-the-art nursery for little Lily. Imported silks, plush heated floors, hand-carved mahogany furniture, and private security guards were assigned exclusively to her protection.

Nora went from sleeping on a lumpy spring mattress in a freezing basement to resting in a king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets. She was assigned a team of top-tier obstetricians, personal chefs, and gentle, highly paid nurses who treated her not as a servant, but as a queen.

Yet, despite the sudden, overwhelming luxury, Nora remained unchanged.

Every afternoon at 3:00 PM, regardless of her health, she walked—now slowly and comfortably—to the main garden parlor, where Don Giovanni sat by the massive gas fireplace.

Her speech hadn't changed. She didn't talk to him about mob politics or multi-million-dollar deals. She sat beside him, held his hand, read him poetry, and let him feel the soft kicks of little Lily through her dress.

Giovanni’s recovery was nothing short of a medical miracle. Driven by his desire to see Nora’s child born, his speech improved rapidly through intensive therapy, and he regained partial mobility in his right side.

One evening, as Lorenzo sat with them in the parlor reviewing reports, Giovanni looked at his son over his teacup.

"Lorenzo," the old Don said, his voice now strong and commanding once more.

"Yes, Father?"

"The girl’s former lover. Brody Miller." Giovanni’s eyes narrowed. "Where is he?"

Lorenzo paused, glancing briefly at Nora, who was fast asleep on the sofa under a soft cashmere blanket.

"He was tracked down in Atlantic City three days ago, Father," Lorenzo said softly. "He was attempting to sell Nora’s personal information to a rival syndicate—the Moretti family's old enemies, the Russo family—hoping to cash in on a ransom scheme."

Giovanni’s face hardened into stone. "And?"

"The Russo family thought they could use the girl as leverage against us," Lorenzo whispered, his jaw clenching. "They don't know that I have already locked down the entire tristate area. They are planning something. They think Nora is just a weak spot in our fortress."

Giovanni looked at Nora’s peaceful, sleeping face, then at Lorenzo.

"Show them..." the old Don growled, his voice vibrating with absolute malice "...what happens when someone touches the Moretti bloodline."
